Our taxes pay for everything. That is how it is in a free country. That is the cost of freedom and everything else in America. Tea Partyers, get over it and become real patriots and stop whining.I think it was Madison who basically said that once the citizenry realized it could vote itself benefits from the public Treasury, it was over. When much less than half of the populace pays more than half the taxes, we'll be there, and we are getting close. It makes you nostalgic for the days when voting was confined to property owners -- the modern equivalent would be net taxpayers.

Sorry. Mr. Madison commented about many things that could destroy or damage irreversibly our Republic, but the two chaps who DID comment on your specific point are usually held to be Alexander Tyler and Alexis deTocqueville.
In any case, all three of them were correct, as we are now seeing. In Panavision and Technicolor.
