More chickens home to the roost
Washington Times ^ | 8/25/2009 | Wesley Pruden

This is no way to treat kinfolks, but cousins don't always count. Napoleon described England as a nation of shopkeepers, and shopkeepers are always on the scout for opportunities to pinch a penny. Besides, "loyalty," like "morality," does not apply to nations.

Old Blighty is awash in high government officials blaming someone else for the incredible decision to send the Lockerbie bomber back to a hero's welcome in Libya. They're afraid the Americans will take out their considerable anger on chips and fish-eating surrender monkeys. There are already the usual threats of a consumer boycott, particularly of goods from Scotland, whose government is officially responsible for sending Abdel Baset al-Megrahi home to die. There'll be no more two-ply cashmere sweater sets for Christmas.

Kenny MacAskill, the Scottish justice minister who freed al-Megrahi, insists the decision was his and only his. But nobody believes him. Nearly everyone thinks Gordon Brown, the prime minister, is the true author of the scheme to trade al-Megrahi for the restoration of trade between Britain and Libya. Al-Megrahi was, after all, convicted only of aiding in the destruction of the Pan Am Boeing 747 in which 287 men, women and children -- including 189 Americans -- died just before Christmas in 1988. It's not like he killed Lord Mountbatten, Lady Bountiful or the twelfth Earl of Sandwich.

Mr. MacAskill, who feels circumstances beyond his control beginning to close in on him, says he asked the British government for its "views" before releasing the terrorist to Col. Moammar Gadhafi, the Libyan tyrant who starred in the nightmares of an earlier generation of Western diplomats.

Obama the Brave set the groveling example, so now he exhibits shock that the UK would release the unrepentant mass murderer to live out his days in his beloved country?

The shocker would be if he'd live to be 93.

At any rate, for Americans, it should be no more visits to the quaint, lawless United Kingdom and no more Obamas.

Wonderful post, thank you. The article lays the entire mess at the door of Obama, where it belongs...since the highest form of flattery is imitation. And speaking of our Great Leader, the latest issue of the Vineyard Gazette, (a Martha Vineyard newspaper), front page: photo of pond and low bushes with a long fawning essay to Obama. Evidently the editor had a tingle up his leg. The paper was three times as thick, full of ads...local businesses (suffering due to Obama’s economic policies), hoping he’ll bring in a few bucks.

Gordon Brown seems like such a sad sack. Is this going to finish him in the upcoming election? I am interested what any of the Anglophiles here think.

Fish and chips. Plenty of fried foods. In Glasgow the average life expectancy for males is 57. Don’t have the statistics for the rest of the ‘province.’

Gheddafi - and let’s be honest - he’s the one responsible for the Pan Am attack, paid blood money (also for the Libyan attack against the La Belle Disco in Germany where Americans were killed and injured).

That blood money was accepted and for reasons of commerce (OIL) and for reasons of state (supposedly dismantling a weapons program) he regained his virginity, becoming acceptable again as a partner.

It’s called REALPOLITIK and for the principled it’s not pretty. Perhaps it wasn’t the case to make a mass murderer one of the “good ole boys” again, but this sordid ending also had a sordid beginning when the west accepted payment without repentance. Murdered human beings (aplenty) were paid for, washed with gasoline... and their memory already puffing out of mufflers and smokestacks before this last disgrace.

Our nation has terminal cancer and Obama will leave this mess for someone to clean up. It could take 50 years after this stupid communist departs for America to be restored.

This government has proven that our Constitution has become irrelevant so therefore they have paved the way for a 'benevolent' despot (like Franco) to march on Washington and take charge for a decade or so.

This ignoramus in his rapid move to communism will have awakened that segment of American population that is the core and there will be serious internal conflict in our country.

Wesley Pruden is an amazing columnist, week in and week out. I am surprised he never achieved much popularity . and you never see him on the various news shows.

It surprises me that he’s never on Fox News as a contributor as he is an extremely insightful columnist.

I would suggest it probably won’t, largely because he is already finished. No one thinks Labour can win the next election anyway - perhaps he just doesnt care anymore?

I think the majority of Brits were ok with the idea of the release on compassionate grounds, considering the guy is dying anyway - however, the sickening display of triumphalism in Tripoli angered a lot of people.

When you think about it this is one of the best arguments for capital punishment I have seen in a while.

Nearly everyone thinks Gordon Brown, the prime minister, is the true author of the scheme...

...Mr. MacAskill, who feels circumstances beyond his control beginning to close in on him, says he asked the British government for its "views" before releasing the terrorist...

Given the relationship between the SNP government in Scotland, Labour in general and Gordon Brown in particular, an equally if not more likely scenario is that McAskill asked London for its 'views', and then proceeded to do the exact opposite.

“Besides whiskey, does Scotland make anything these days?”

Lots of things, but thanks to cowards unable to understand teh difference between Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill, appeasement continues.

Worst of all, the English know better than do we Americans, that the Muslim world understands best, and responds fastest to, power and vengeance.

Islam Delenda Est - because they are forcing us to.
