The man who took the decision to free the Lockerbie bomber from jail on compassionate grounds accused him yesterday of breaking an undertaking not to celebrate his release.
Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the bombing, had shown no sensitivity to the families of those who died, Kenny MacAskill, Scotlands Justice Secretary, told the Scottish Parliament. It was the first time that Scotlands Nationalist administration has joined the condemnation of the triumphal scenes.
Aware that Britain is caught in the cross-hairs of international outrage, Gordon Brown is expected today to urge Libya not to fête al-Megrahi further. Appearing before the cameras for the first time in weeks, Mr Brown will hold talks at No 10 with Binyamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, before taking questions from the press. Although Mr Brown is expected to issue a robust defence of his principled decision that the release was a matter only for the devolved Scottish government, diplomatic efforts are being made to restore Britains battered credibility among allies, including the US.
Amid a rumble of accusations that Britain connived at the release in return for trade deals with oil-rich Libya, aides said last night that Mr Brown was likely to disclose how he had demanded assurances from Tripoli that al-Megrahi would not be fêted in the celebrations on Tuesday to mark the 40th anniversary of Colonel Muammar Gaddafis seizure of power.

Gee whiz!! Everyone knows since grade school that if you cross your fingers behind your back, a promise doesn’t count.
/sarcasm
of course he did you friggin idiots - you morons LET HIM GO.
Dumbarses.
(not you myknowledge of course)....
The difference in us and them is that we would do this only in reaction to the Pan AM 103 murders and the release and subsequent celebration of the perp. OTOH, they would do it as a first step and take great joy in doing it.
Let me guess: He also “promised” not to blow anyone else up ever again.
MacAskill must be dumber than a box of rocks.
The truth is that Brown and Obama knew weeks before that the terrorist would be released. The real question is why didn’t Obama speak out publicly when he found out that this was planned. Condemning it after the fact indicates that the fix was in. I blame Obama more than the Scots or Brown.
“Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the bombing, had shown no sensitivity to the families of those who died, Kenny MacAskill, Scotlands Justice Secretary, told the Scottish Parliament. “
As opposed to MacAskill, who let the creep out in the first place?
Sorry, but some crimes are too heinous to warrant compassionate release. al-Megrahi is not some aging pickpocket or octogenarian jewel thief. He is the convicted murderer of nearly 300 innocent people, and doesn’t deserve to spend even one day as a free man.
Also, if MacAskill really thought this wouldn’t turn into a PR coup for Libya, he’s too dumb for his job. I fear what the fallout could be from this. I doubt the intended compassion of the act will impress many already opposed to the UK or the West at large. I do think it very possible that it will be interpreted as a sign of weakness or lack of resolve.
> My god, if you trust a terrorist to keep his word, just who can you trust?
Indeed. It’s like telling a terrorist “well, I’ll give you this lighter but you PROMISE not to light the explosives on your body..OK?”
” Lockerbie bomber broke promise not to celebrate, says Kenny MacAskill “ ...... SHOCKING !!!! SARCASM !!
Trust no Muslim.
Al-Megrahi is grinning...
...because MacAskill fell for his taqiyya.
Muzzies can break promises, because when you ask a promise to a Muzzie, there is no guarantee that he / she would abide by it.
Good pic and what did this idiot expect. He knew that he would celebrate. Don’t you just love these lying POS in government? sarc/
What will be worse for Scotland and England is when Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi fails to die within 3 months and lives for years.
This has nothing to do with ‘compassionate release’ as other Scot prisoners with terminal conditions have died in prison this year and they only murdered 1 person whereas Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi murdered hundreds.
I know. I just don’t understand how they could act that way.
I know they’ve taken the very strong and devastating action of issuing a condemnation, but when are they going they going to get serious and fart in their general direction?
Heavens to Murgatroyd...He lied....
His real celebration is when he is tutoring others of his ilk in the proper way to deliver an explosive device.
And if he really wants to celebrate and get his ‘fame’, he will just strap a bomb to himself and walk into a crowded marketplace, all in the name of Islam
Then ALL involved in his release can wring their hands and apologize AGAIN.
