SDPD Officer Arrested for Pulling a Gun, Being Drunk at Carlsbad Bar

AN DIEGO - A rookie San Diego police officer, arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public this past weekend after she supposedly pulled out her gun at a Carlsbad nightspot, is on administrative leave.

Christine M. Thurston, 23, pulled out her gun while off-duty at Hennessey's Tavern on Friday evening, prompting a manager to call 911, Carlsbad police spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said.

Before officers arrived at the Roosevelt Street bar, someone had taken Thurston's gun away, and bouncers had put her outside, Diamond said.

Thurston was arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness, a misdemeanor. Diamond said there was no evidence she threatened anyone with the gun, which had been in her purse.

San Diego police retrieved her gun later that night, Diamond said.

Thurston was released to a relative about an hour after her arrest, he said. She had been a patrol officer for less than a year, a San Diego police spokesperson said.

A court hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 7.

A person waving a gun would be charged with rude display of a firearm, a misdemeanor. Penal Code 417(A):

If the violation occurs in a public place and the firearm is a pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person, by imprisonment in a county jail for not less than three months and not more than one year, by a fine not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both that fine and imprisonment.

That young woman on the trunk might ought to be told but I doubt she’d listen anyway, she thinks those guys are too cool and their neat guns, patrol units, radios and funny stories...

I'm not trying to push any buttons but what exactly do you think the waitress did that was so wrong?

She hasn’t done anything wrong (maybe, don’t know), reread my post. She’s a cutie but that’s in bad taste and that darn sure what a dumb idea on the LEO’s part. There can be a price paid for overfamilarity with LEOs...depending on the politics and/or weak officers.

Alcohol and firearms. A winning combination!

Finally, this has got to be the “new professionalism” that Scalia was talking about.
