There are plenty of areas that are perfectly safe (safer than most US cities).

You go right ahead and believe that, and act accordingly.

I saw the handwriting on the wall and stopped traveling to Mexico in 2000.
I am fluent in Spanish, but always hide the fact and some of the conversations and comments I "accidentally" overheard would curl your hair.

Life is too short.

That would be you. One is 25 times more likely to die wandering is a suburb of Chicago, DC, or Baltimore, than where I live a couple months a year in Mexico. Mexican spainish I understand, american ‘gang-speak’ I don’t. Only idiots would go to the ‘frontera’ in mx - likewise the ‘neighborhoods’ in the US.
