“But profit, just like fire, profit needs to be controlled or it will consume itself.”

Sheer sophomoronic sh*t!

When profit rises sufficiently, competition enter that field, and soon profits are driven down by competition.

Capitalism will eat its own children in its naked pursuit of profit, if left uncontrolled.

” No one in their right mind believes unrestrained capitalism will regulate itself, as the recent mortgage crisis amply demonstrated “

Ann Coulter put it like this
“It’s the famous liberal two-step: First screw something up, then claim that it’s screwed up because there’s not enough government oversight (it’s the free market run wild!), and then step in and really screw it up in the name of “reform.”

You should pedal your drivel at a site that doesn’t know better.

“Capitalism will eat its own children in its naked pursuit of profit, if left uncontrolled.”

Karl? Karl Marx? Is that you?

Since Marx forgot that greed of Capitalistic running dog exploiters of the masses is balanced by the masses desire to receive the most for their money, competition reduces and controls profit.

So what are you saying: Republicans, believing in smaller government, less taxes, more individual freedom, fought a good fight against the deregulation of the banking industry, but lost?

Unfortunately, both sides, both parties (which is exactly my point) being controlled by special interests betrayed their own constituencies, destroying our economy in the process.

WHAT: “No one in their right mind believes unrestrained capitalism will regulate itself, as the recent mortgage crisis amply demonstrated”

This was not unrestrained capitalism- this was the liberal philosophy called entitlement.

And the capitalistic market is now righting itself.

Let capitalism alone, and the supply and demand market will steer it’s course.

Yes, that’s true...but only if the masses have fair access. What happens if the masses only have one supplier, or only one product to buy?

” But I do think our democracy ...”

Democracy?? No, we have never had a democracy and our founders were totally against a democracy. Words mean things and we need to get back to calling things their proper name.

We have a representative Republic, if we can keep it, and at this point it appears we cannot. I would not want to live in a democracy - which is the equivalent of 5 wolves and 4 sheep voting on what’s for dinner. We have enough of this nonsense in our current form of government.

A ****limited**** federal government with significant checks and balances to prevent it from becoming unlimited is what the founders wanted. We have traveled a long way from that vision and we need to get back to it.

Personal responsibility, capitalism, liberty is what made America the greatest country on earth. It is not perfect, but it light years better than the next best choice.

Liberty means you have the right to fail miserably - no “safety net”. Make bad choices, live with the consequences. It makes for a quick sobering of the stupid and lazy in society. Want to eat? Go to work or depend on other people’s ***charity***. Charity is a free will gift, which does not mean forcing other people into servitude to pay up for other people’s mistakes, laziness, stupidity. Liberty means owning up to your responsibilities - no free ride.

Socialism/marxism, “the common good”, shared responsibility, government control of the people, are all forms of tyranny and will turn America into a third world country where there are two classes of people: rulers and serfs, and I don’t want to live in that country.

You sir, are a fool.

Unrestrained capitalism is not responsible for the mortgage meltdown.

Government regulations forced lenders to find the ways to hit lending quotas. On top of that, Fannie May and Freddie Mac bought sub prime mortgages, allowing lenders to write risky loans, because the lenders knew they could sell the mortgage.

Government regulation and interference in the mortgage industry is directly responsible for the mortgage meltdown.

Anyone who says otherwise is a shill for more government intervention.

Go peddle your socialist garbage elsewhere.

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

And, I took valuable time to give you a lesson in how government can distort the free market.

Evidently, you don’t see it as a bad thing.

Again, you’re a fool.

Thus it becomes the function of the state to regulate capitalism properly in order to insure the common good of all.

Who is the "State"? A bunch of elected or appointed individuals who are as subject to subornation as anyone, if not more so.

That's why you need a division of powers. That will occur naturally in a capitalistic market with the level of technology and diverse populace of ours, unless the would-be monopolists (which every capitalist is) can ally themselves with an Overweening State.

That's why you have to leave substantial power in the 50 States. "We The People" sense that intrinsically, it lies at the root of their opposition to the National Health Plans of Congress.

You may believe it is about a liberal philosophy called entitlement, but that’s just for the little people to chew on. It is all about the money. Follow the money, as “Deepthroat” suggested.

Improperly controlled capitalism, bad government regulation, socialism, monopolies, lack of access to free trade all limit profit.

Properly controlled capitalism, equal standards, copyright protection, free markets, environmental laws, free association, equal competition enhance profit.

” as the recent mortgage crisis amply demonstrated “

What’s being said to you is that free-market forces didn’t cause the mortage crisis. Generally speaking the tampering of the free-market forces did. No mater which side of the isle did it...and it was the democratic side.

Don’t act like you want to understand something if you’re not going to listen.

To davidfarr, who like parsy, should let their tagline speak for itself

We have a Constitutional Republic, but I catch your drift.

What I believe our Constitutional Republic best needs right now is a good, strong, healthy, dose of the people’s voice. It has to be authentic. It has to speak, and it has to be heard. This has hither too been impossible to achieve, but now for the first time in history, it is possible. Let’s let the people speak.
