Lord Mandelson faced fresh questions over his links to Libya last night following the decision to free the Lockerbie bomber.
The Business Secretary denied that the Government had done a deal to free Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who was convicted of the 1988 terrorist atrocity that claimed 270 lives. However, his claims were contradicted by Saif Gaddafi, the son of the Libyan leader, in a conversation with Megrahi as the pair flew home from Glasgow.
In a transcript obtained by The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Gaddafi tells Megrahi: You were on the table in all commercial, oil and gas agreements that we supervised in that period. You were on the table in all British interests when it came to Libya, and I personally supervised this matter. Also, during the visits of the previous prime minister, Tony Blair.
This latest contradiction of the Governments line will further increase tensions between Britain and the United States, which continued yesterday to express anger over the decision to free Megrahi. Robert Mueller, the FBI director, made public a hard-hitting letter he sent to Kenny MacAskill, the Scottish justice secretary who ordered the release. Mr Mueller called the decision inexplicable and detrimental to justice, adding: Indeed your action makes a mockery of the rule of law. Your action gives comfort to terrorists around the world. Downing Street confirmed last night that Gordon Brown had discussed the possible release of Megrahi with Colonel Gaddafi when the two men met on the fringes of the G8 summit in Italy last month. A letter the Prime Minister sent to the Libyans, dated last Thursday, the day of the release, said: SNIP
The evidence is mounting that there was far more to the release of Megrahi than simply a judicial decision based on compassion, he said.

I’d expect the SNP Scottish Executive to be involved with something like this, but if the Labour Government is involved then the Tories need to hit both of them hard. Releasing a murderer for a financial deal is dirty.
If true, then this needs to be campaign issue against both involved parties in the General Election next spring. If handle right, both the SNP and Labour should be handed their heads by the voters.
They said that was </I>part</I> of the deal, anyway. But don’t underestimate the bragging rights and PR victory over the West this is.
The justice department could have stopped this and they didn’t. We have charges pending against this man. No way Mueller didn’t know about this. Feigned outrage to cover their a$$es and they hope you never find out what really happened.
If young people are willing to kill themselves in acts of terrorism, then how willing would someone who is going to meet his maker soon be?
Our outrage shouldn’t be with the Brits, it should be with the justice department and the president. They could have stopped this but they chose not to. Wise up folks, you’re taking the bait.
“Who makes a deal for a dying man? “
Precisely. Money deals get done for money. This was a political deal.
“The Libyans are the ones that got taken. “
B.S. This is a smoke screen.
Yep. Just like Magic Johnson has assured us that he's been HIV positive for 18 years (but has never reportedly suffered from any symptoms.)
If Mandelbum is involved it’s dirty and devious. Always.
You know how obama feels about Muslims, his buds, and how much he loves/hates the citizens of the United States. Somehow obama must have ok’d the Lybian deal by keeping silent..his interest in forming good relationships with Muslims is most important to him. OR, Britain/Scotland applied the “big payback” to ob for his dissing/disrespect of the UK and his lack of support. OR, ob won favor with the UK by being silent, and he won favor with the Lybian muslims by saying nothing...until after the fact. Not to mention if he got something further out of the deal..IMHO.
