Travel Icon Says He'll Avoid Arizona Because of Gun Laws
Fox News ^ | August 21, 2009 | N/A

Travel icon Arthur Frommer says he won't be spending his tourism dollars at the Grand Canyon, or anywhere else in Arizona, because the state's laws allow people he described as "thugs" and "extremists" to openly carry firearms.

The author of budget-travel guides said on his blog Wednesday that he was "shocked beyond measure" by reports that protesters openly carried guns and rifles outside a Phoenix building where President Barack Obama spoke on Monday.

Frommer says he won't personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons as a means of political protest.

Or DC. Lot’s of interesting things to see in DC. Wasn’t it Mayor Marion Barry that said: “If it wasn’t for the murders DC would have a low crime rate”?

He should stay home in New York where all the people are “normal”. This seems to prove some of the posts about the quality of education in this country’s major universities. He went to Yale.

Good on him!

Instead this Einstein should vacation in gun-free areas like Wash DC, NYC, Detroit, LA, etc.

He should also stay out of heavy rain, because he would probably drown, staring up at the rain, with his mouth open.

In Continetal Europe, I saw plenty of security, and 18 year old draftees, carrying some VERY mean looking auto weapons through every train station and airport. Pity none of them would allow a picture(!). Europe has endured lots more terror than we have, and this is so routine there, no one notices, except Americans.

If you want a scare, look one of the commandos under the Effiel tower in the eye.

It looked like you’d likely get a Bullpup pointed in your face, or worse.

NRA travel guide should post that as an endorsement for members to visit AZ.

BTW, those people were not carrying as a protest, it was an expression of their 2nd Amendment rights which AZ appears to regard as one not to be infringed. Sorry Mr Frommer, the Constitution trumps your little hissy fit.

Aside from local ordinances, there are no laws against carrying a firearm openly in any states, is there?

Yest there are, in many states. Even in Texas you can't carry a handgun openly. You can carry a long gun, but not a handgun.

It's only recently that you could carry a handgun, concealed in your vehicle, without a permit/license. When I first moved to Texas in '77, you could not carry a loaded handgun at all. Even an unloaded one had to be locked away your trunk or otherwise be out of reach, and that was only changed, in series of changes to the law, over the past few years.

From Wiki...lets see how long it lasts:

Frommer was raised in Jefferson City, Missouri, moving to Brooklyn, New York when he was 14. He graduated from New York University in 1950 with a political science degree, and graduated with honors from Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. Frommer was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, but was posted to Europe. He is also known to be quite a liberally slanted propogandist. His political viewpoints often overshadow his travel viewpoints; in his blog he stated that he will boycott Arizona because he was "shocked beyond measure" that Arizona citizens could openly carry firearms as a form of protest, conveniently ignoring the fact that at least 17 other states allow the same high level of freedom that Arizona does. However, research show that wherever law abiding citizens are allowed to carry arms, the violent crime rates are generally low.

He should also avoid Alaska, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and Vermont, as these states all allow open carry without a permit or license. He might also want to avoid all the states that have a “shall issue” concealed carry licenses as I'm sure he believes that it's even worse not knowing if the guy next to you might just happen to be carrying a loaded gun.

Considering that Phoenix is now the Kidnapping Capitol of the US, more people ought to openly carry.

I also make it a point to tell my local businesses that post a 30.06 (no CCWs) sign that I choose to do business elsewhere SPECIFICALLY because of that.

I realized recently that my local Costco warehouse store is sporting one of those No Firearms signs. That might be a problem.

It's still smart to not lay your pistol on the car seat next to your cellphone; else, when you answer while driving you might blow your brains out!

Worse, I suppose, would be to try to fire your cellphone at a perp.

Actually that statue is located in a state with severe restrictions on owning and carrying firearms. The guy probably feels quite safe there. Of course the many founding fathers from that state, not to mention the guys who inspired the statue are likely spinning away in there graves.
