WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Toyota Corolla remained the top-selling vehicle under the Cash for Clunkers program, according to data released Friday by the government.
Asian automakers also continued to increase their share of sales under the government incentive program that offers car buyers rebates on new vehicle purchases of $3,500 or $4,500 in return for turning in older, less fuel efficient vehicles.
Toyota vehicles accounted for 19.2 percent of the 489,269 sales recorded through Friday morning, while General Motors had the second spot at 17.7 percent.

I love this map.

Oh how I wish Ford had beaten Government Motors !
Ford Motor Co.s Focus was the top seller, followed by Toyota Motor Corp.s Corolla, Honda Motor Co.s Civic and Toyotas Prius and Camry, data from the department showed today.
I have seen more new ford Focus on the road than any other car. Prius is probably second.
“Oh how I wish Ford had beaten GM”
Actually, the real sales numbers, according to Edmunds.com, lists the number one and two sellers as Ford Escape and Ford Focus. The governments figures are derived at by counting how each vehicle is equipped as a seperate sale. Stupid figures. Government gobbledegook.
“Justice”
All 4WD, you might note. 4WD is inherently less economical than 2WD, simply because there is so much more internal friction in the driveline, which in the 4WD is still producing a drag when the secondary axle is NOT engaged.
To make 4WD work REALLY right, requires a much higher degree of engineering than is currently being applied. There is a highly refined design called the Torsen (Torque Sensing) differential, which limits wheelspin by directing the power to the wheel which needs the most torque, not the one spinning freely. In any 4WD, there is not only a difference between the wheels' speed of rotation between the left and right sides while turning (the inside wheel is turning a smaller radius, therefore is turning slower), there is also a difference in the speed of wheel turn between the front axle and the rear. To properly compensate, there should be a differential between the power delivered to the front wheels and the rear wheels. Lower-priced 4WDs do not have this refinement, thus, when trying to negotiate a turn while 4WD mode is engaged, the front wheels scrub and dance and lose traction.
4WDs were bought by WAY more people than whom had a need for it. Most 2WD drive vehicles can get in and out of most places a 4WD can go, but that is in large part due to the skill and judgment of the driver. Having 4WD drive only instills a false sense of confidence in drivers of less skill and competence.
The government's results showed small cars as the top choice for shoppers looking for Cash for Clunker deals. But an independent analysis by Edmunds.com disputed those results, and showed that two full-size trucks and a small crossover SUV were actually among the top-ten buys.
Interesting, another Government lie. Are they capable of telling the truth?
There is this thing called "snow", which is the main reason that most people buy 4WD----NOT off-roading. Being from Florida, you probably don't understand the need.
Yeah, the 4WD help them get out of the median strip after they've driven off the road after going too fast.
I believe the Baraqqis define truth as whatever advances the socialist cause. So in their view, they always tell the truth.
Very good post - thanks. Are you an engineer?
The very reason my wife got 4WD. It comes in handy in her business trips to western Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana in the winter time. We even occcasionaly get some serious snow where we live in central Illinois.
I bought a Toyota Corolla in ‘05. It’s a stick shift and the sticker said 36/42 mpg. 90,000 trouble free miles later it still gets that, or better.
If this one ever wears out, I’ll get another one.
