Kyl Says Cooperative Health Plan Won't Win Support
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 18, 2009 | Corey Boles

Posted on 08/18/2009 7:42:42 PM PDT by reaganaut1

The number two Senate Republican said Tuesday replacing a public health care option with a nonprofit private cooperative wouldn't win any more Republican support, saying they are essentially the same thing.

Sen. Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.), said Republican objections were more fundamental than simply changing the name of a new national entity to compete with private medical insurers.

"It's [the same thing] by another name, it is a trojan horse," Mr. Kyl said, speaking on a conference call with reporters.

Mr. Kyl said even if the idea of a public option and that of a medical review for older people by their doctor were dropped altogether from the proposed reforms, he doubted whether many Republicans would support Democrats' efforts to introduce sweeping health-care reforms.

"The approach that congressional Democrats and the president took was we need to reform the entire health care delivery system and insurance system with a heavy dose of government involvement to resolve two problems: cost and access," Mr. Kyl said.

...

He said he believed any health-care reform should start with a move to tackle medical malpractice, arguing that billions of dollars could be saved in health-care costs each year if doctors didn't have to practice "defensive medicine."

Mr. Kyl said small employers should be allowed to join together to give them more muscle when negotiating terms with health insurers, and that health insurance should be permitted to be sold across state lines like other forms of insurance.

The federal government should encourage individuals to save more for potential health care needs through tax-friendly accounts, which would reduce their reliance on costly insurance.

He said that none of these elements formed part of the Democrats' reform plans, saying that unless they were, he would not consider voting for health care reform legislation.

Based on this article I think when the New York Times is saying that the democrats are going it alone because Republican will never support any bill, it means that the democrats will vote for “co-op” rather than the public option who are virtually the same but they think they can get the blue dogs democrats to support it. If this analysis is correct then the left wing will go insane, yes more insane than they are now even if co-op and public option are the same, the left wing lunatics do not think they are the same.

If it is funded by the government, or run by the government, it is a “public option”.

I don’t get New Englanders. They flush their section of the country in the crapper with Socialist lite programs, and then think its a good idea for the rest of us. It must be the cold winters freezing their brains.

Mr. Kyl said...health insurance should be permitted to be SOLD ACROSS STATE LINES like other forms of insurance.

Yes! This is one idea on which the Repubs will get broad support if they broadcast it long and hard enough.

Then no longer can O-Boob say the Repubs have no ideas.

Well, there is "Live Free or Die" New Hamster. They're been voting Democrat lately with all the Mass. people moving in, but it's still a low-government, low-tax state.

The House leftists aren't going to vote for ANY bill that doesn't include the public option, and Zero himself said that he wouldn't sign such a bill if it excludes it.

Personally, if I was one of the House Dems, I'd encourage my colleagues to sit back and let the Blue Dogs negotiate with Obama and pass the thing. They would still get 90% of what they want and Obama can stick the more leftist crap in later. But alas, House moonbats aren't politically astute and are overextending their hand.

Am I wrong or is Kyl a homosexual? Didn’t the McCain group let him speak at the last convention? I must be wrong on that. Any way, there will be absolutely no insurance sold across state lines and there are two reasons. 1. States control insurance. It is a clear states rights thing. 2.let’s say you are insuring nice Morman families in Nevada— you are not going to insure “gays” in San Fagsico at the same rates.

“Mr. Kyl said...health insurance should be permitted to be SOLD ACROSS STATE LINES like other forms of insurance.”

I agree. Good idea, and would be popular once people realize that it encourages more competition and lower costs for those who need both.

The other popular thing to emphasize is medical tort reform.

You've got to be kidding.

To your other point, insurance co's won't be FORCED to sell over state lines but they should be able to if they so desire. More competition...lower costs.

To “sold across state lines” and “tort reform” — both excellent ideas, both vital — I’d add “allow a la carte insurance to be sold”.

In other words: if you don’t want or need pregnancy insurance, podiatry coverage, chiropractic coverage, drug/alcohol abuse coverage, and so forth, you aren’t obligated to buy them.

If all you want is coverage for catastrophic illnesses, and you’re willing to pay the rest out of pocket, you should be able to have that. And you should be HELD to paying it out of pocket.

The way it is now, the psychiatrist, podiatrist, chiropractic, and so forth lobbies have forced state plans to include these (expensive) coverages in EVERY plan, jacking up the price.

that won’t happen. States regulate insurance. They actually set the rates. States will never allow anything but approved policies and rates to be sold in there states. That is in the Constitution. Nothing but removal of the 10th amendment will suffice.

I was wrong .It was KOLBE, the avowed homosexual who was asked to speak. He was from Arizona though. Anyway, no sales of insurance across state lines will be permitted.
