Stifling Health Choice

Health Care: Lost in the kerfuffle about a pro-choice president being honored at the University of Notre Dame was the damage the Freedom of Choice Act might do to the nation's health care.Specifically, how many Catholic hospitals will close and how many Catholic doctors will quit if it becomes law?

According to the Catholic Health Association, Catholic institutions make up 13% of the nation's nearly 5,000 hospitals, and employ more than 600,000 people. CHA says one of every six Americans hospitalized in the U.S. are cared for in a Catholic hospital.

A lot of federal funds flow through the nation's hospitals from Medicare and Social Security and other programs. What would happen if the federal government insisted under FOCA and in the absence of a conscience clause that Catholic health care professionals and hospitals provide abortion-related services?

Obama's intent is clear. His Health Care plan would itself stifle care, even on its face, you cannot add tens of millions of more to the mix without a commensorate addition off doctors, nurses, facilities, etc., not to mention the monstrosity provisions in the biill.

Obama's horrific push towards the most radical abortion increase in history through FOCA would cause even more damage.

But, the slumbering giant is stirring.

Great article. Considering the number of Protestant universities, hospitals ,doctors and patients out there that feel the same way, the writer could have reached out to the multitudes if he or she had used the word Christian instead of Catholic. We are all in this fight together.

I sincerely hope that I am wrong when I say, “When push comes to shove, the Catholic leadership will bend over and somehow come to ‘a compromise’ rather than take such a strong stand as to actually close up shop rather than do abortions”. As I said, I hope I am wrong, as it would be refreshing to actually see such a powerful organization as the Catholic Church actually take a strong stand and not flinch from it (as in it’s soft-peddling to so-called Catholic politicians)
