Prove you back the NHS (by expelling Daniel Hannan)

David Cameron has been challenged to prove Tory support for the Health Service is more than 'skin deep'. Health Secretary Andy Burnham called on him to expel from his party Daniel Hannan, the MEP who went on U.S. television to call the NHS a '60-year-old mistake'.

Lord Mandelson attacked Mr Cameron as 'a fraud'. The Business Secretary claimed: 'He's different when he thinks people aren't looking or listening. And the sentiments he expresses in Britain are not shared by his party, so there is a double fraud.'

The Tory leader faced further pressure after evidence emerged that senior Tories would like to see radical reforms of the Health Service that go far beyond official party policy.

It was revealed that Tory frontbenchers Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Greg Clark wrote a book with Mr Hannan that says the NHS is 'no longer relevant in the 21st century'.

And a policy paper written by the 40-strong Cornerstone group of social conservatives - which includes 11 Tory frontbenchers - came to light.

It says the 'Stalinist' NHS should be replaced with a private insurance scheme.
