MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - As a former CEO of Goldman Sachs Inc., one of the most important firms in the investment world, Jon Corzine has unique financial expertise among the nation's 50 governors.
But after four years in office, the Democrat has not managed to get the state out of deep debt, deliver wholly on his campaign promise to boost property tax relief or stem the state's rising unemployment rate.
Now, as he trails a Republican former federal prosecutor in the polls, his re-election bid is looking increasingly like a referendum on his financial acumen.
And whether voters decide to blame Corzine or the recession for the state's money problems could foreshadow next year's elections. Only Virginia and New Jersey are electing governors this year, but 37 states will do so next year. Incumbents could be on the ballots in close to half those states.

“He’s dead,Jim!”
Stick a fork in this election... unless this guy is Lazarus or the challenger gets caught twice having sex with sheep, this is a done deal.
Corzine’s attacks pretty much consist of screaming “No bid contracts!” and “Christie likes Bush!”
That fact alone is enough of a reason to run his @$$ off.
It’s New Jersey. I’ll believe Corzine loses only if he actually does. The scum Dems will pull it out somehow. They always do in that state.
When is the election?
November 3, 2009.
Right now the dems are laying flowers on all the Corzine voters' graves.
Don't count him out until all the ballots are counted.
And remember: it's New Jersey counting the ballots.
Corzine is toast.
But this is NJ we are talking about - closer to the election, Corzine will run ads that say if you vote for Christie, you won't be able to abort, and NJ lemmings will line up and vote against Christie (not "for" Corzine). To most NJ liberals, it doesn't matter if unemployment is 30% and taxes are 80%, as long as they can abort.
