Jurors on Friday convicted Katherine Nadal of serious bodily injury to a child, determining that she cut off her 5-week-old son’s genitals. The jury deliberated for about three hours.

The child’s father, Camden Gothia, 38, testified that Nadal spent the previous day injecting cocaine and then arguing that the baby needed to be circumcised. Gothia opposed it.
The baby was attacked on March 13, 2007. Prosecutors said Nadal watched dispassionately as emergency workers saved the infant’s life. The next day, she tested positive for cocaine, methadone and a mild tranquilizer.

Sometimes juries deliberately appear slower than they really are. They don’t want to give the impression of being rash. They may have made their verdict in 10 minutes and chit chatted for the rest of the time.
