Thanks for the ping-That was a great article. I am the proud owner of 2 fine Browning products.
Thanks for the ping, that was a good read.
I have read that the reason the BAR was not issued at least in large number during WWI was the Army felt it was such an extraordinary design that they were afraid the enemy would capture them.
As a matter of fact, John’s son Val used the BAR in World War I, I think he was testing it in combat.
That’s my understanding as well. Too secret (and too good) to use in combat. To somebody in DC that made sense. You just have to shake your head.
Amen!
And the rest is history.
Imagine the liberal horror; an eleven year old not only handling a firearm, but designing and building them. And with his father's approval and encouragement!
God bless the US and God bless J.M. Browning.
Great post and delightful read. Kudos to you, Sir!
I’ll be passing this on to family and friends.
Excellent picture, mind if I borrow it?
John C. Garand designed the magnificent M1--lauded by Patton as the "greatest single battle implement ever devised by man."
John T. Thompson designed the incomparable Thompson submachine gun.
But John Moses Browning, the greatest of the three, designed an entire arsenal of firearms including semiautomatic handguns, sporting rifles and shotguns, light and heavy machine guns, and even ammunition for them.
I own or have owned a Springfield Model 1911A semiautomatic handgun, a Winchester Model 97 pump-action shotgun, a Browning Auto-5 semiautomatic shotgun, and a Winchester Model 1890 pump-action .22--all John M. Browning designs. I have the deepest respect for this man of great genius.
Obama has been handing out Medals of Freedom to undeserving political hacks and Marxist rabble rousers. John Moses Browning actually deserves one--even posthumously--and will likely never receive one.
My dad carried the BAR in World War II. Threw away the bipod early, due to the extra weight.
Great writeup, by the way.
I've a Garand myself, though I think I'd like to have an M-14 as well. I would consider the M-14 the M-1 Garand's logical successor with bottom feed and an improved gas system. I consider it the pinnacle of development of battle rifles.
Be my guest
Saturday Ping!
From Moses to John Moses, there was non like Moses..
So let it be written.
So let it be done.
It’s astonishing how much of what JMB designed is still in use, a century (more or less) later.
A biography of St. John Moses Browning, in comic book format.
