Another chestnut dug up by The Ones bete noire at Naked Emperor News, destined to be the inspiration for a new lederhosen segment on Glenn Beck. You might recall that this issues come up before in the context of Obamas campaign: For a few days after the election, Rahm Emanuels stated fondness for mandatory national service was a hot topic on righty blogs, especially after the Obama transition website posted an entry on national service requiring 50-100 hours per year from students. After the outcry from the sphere, the requirement language was quietly replaced by more ambiguous language about setting a goal of 50-100 hours. I skimmed the transcript of Obamas answers at last years presidential campaign forum on service and cant find him endorsing anything like a mandatory obligation, and I find it exceedingly hard to believe that hed have the votes for something like this in Congress when he cant even get his health-care plan passed. But then, Id never have guessed hed nationalize General Motors either. Color me very skeptical that this is something to worry about but less skeptical than I used to be.

Zero will have used up all of political capital when ObamaCare fails. After that, he will be just another Jimmy Carter.
I heard him endorse mandatory national service during one of his many blah blah speeches ... on 10/01/08 . I have it recorded on Sirius from FoxNews. He was in LaCrosse, WI telling all kids to serve in some capacity to get a college education in return for that service.
And March 11, 2009 H.R.1444 introduced for a commission to be developed to explore:
“Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”
Bookmarked for later.
