Gary is expected to be the Obama administration's "national model" for urban revitalization, according to U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has established a "Gary Project" that will seek to address issues of urban decay and foster economic development in the city, including demolition of vacant properties, according to Bayh, D-Ind.

Yep, it’s a recreation of an iron-age village in Wales.
LOL...Gary already IS a national model for democratic urban policies.
Really it’s a bit lower on the anatomy.
YES!! Wait til the people see what a FAILURE trying to get Gary CIVILIZED! Watch out for a Potemkin Village thingy, though.
Those who are not familiar with Gary,it makes Detroit look loke an all-white gated community.
Not sure if your wife’s school is public or private.
His school is private and Catholic. So far, they are hanging on to that. Uniforms, dicipline, the Rosary...it’s okay. His compatriots at the school fall into two categories: idealistic white 22 year olds from college and veteran African American teachers (he is Indian-American). Ironically enough, his teaching partner is a next door neighbor of Obama in Hyde Park, who was a high school classmate of Michelle. Btw, she speaks highly of M. Obama. (fair disclosure and all that)
But this partner teacher sounds like a piece of work. LOL She warns my sweetie about where to park his car, how to avoid being robbed, etc, railing about the n-words in the neighborhood. What to do on sunny days or on rainy days to stay safe in this neighborhood. She is fond of him and doesn’t want him to meet the fate of the beloved male gym teacher last year: He was murdered in the parking lot of the school.
:(
Should be given to Illinois
Gary? Indiana? How else do clean up a cesspool other than fill it with dirt?
Gery makes Detroit look like Camelot.
Can you tell me which school? I went to a Catholic School on the south side. If you don't want to reveal it on the board you can freep-mail me.
Nothing wrong with Gary that leveling and covering with salt wouldn’t fix.
And a lot cheaper than implementing Obummer’s “model”.
I grew up on the far southeast side of Chicago. About ten minutes from the Indiana border. That area used to be okay but Gary had a bad rep even thirty years ago. It’s a cesspool of humanity. The only way to clean would be to fill it.
I think this looks better than it does now. Or at least in some places.
Have to admit, some places inside the borders of Gary are still like this. Most are not.
No it's not. It's precisely the wrong thing to do. The right thing to do was listed in Post #7.
... but he said he and Sims agreed the $24.7 million initially proposed likely would not be enough to remedy Gary's needs.
Heavens no, of course not. And it never will be.
Besides, this is our grand-children's money they are throwing away, not theirs!
Gary Mayor Rudy 'Superfly' Clay, Senator Evan Bayh, and Dep Sec of HUD Ron Sims
Mayor Clay bought a Hummer on taxpayer money this year claiming he was entitled and that it saves tax money. Guess he will be getting new rims now.
I moved from Lake County, IN 7 or 8 years ago, lived in Crown Point then. A few years earlier, there was a drug bust in Gary that nabbed a Gary department head and several associates that were selling drugs out of the City Hall basement. Talk about going a bunch of steps further than the usual Gary graft!
About the only significant commercial activity in Gary are steel mills and some associated ancillary business that support them or purchase from them. Donald Trump had a casino at a marina in Gary but I don't know if that is still in existence. They built a new airport (federal $$$ did I imagine)to try and set it up as a competitor (it was a bust economically) to Midway and O'Hare since the eastern Chicago metro region and outliers like South Bend are quite a haul to the other two airports.
NAPL?
