Talk about trashing the environment, solar panels and wind turbines are huge eyesores whereever they’re installed.

When I got out of grad school the second time one of my first consulting jobs was to look at the environmental impact of large-scale "renewable" energy sources, like solar and solar. Without giving away too much proprietary data, let me say that the overall conclusion was that siting these things would be an environmental nightmare. I think we are seeing that conclusion borne out. This project is in trouble along those lines. Pickens is bailing out of his Texas wind farm project for related reasons (running power lines long distance among them).

On this score (and others), nuclear is really the best way to go. On a comparative basis, you get prodigious amounts of energy on a regular, reliable basis for very little land use, almost zero emissions, and readily manageable waste volumes and forms. Nuclear facilities can be safely sited relatively near to utilization centers, avoiding the need for transmission of power over long distances from remotely-sited generators. The answer to our future baseload electricity needs is staring us right in the face, but we don't have the will or desire to see it.
