The Daily Bias, August 5, 2009

New York Times

Obama Setting Out to Put Brighter Face on Economy. Unemployment rising, GDP tanking, the nation's deficit four times higher than in January, but hey, this is a Democratic administration we're talking about, so Happy Days are Here Again! While the article itself is actually harder on Obama than I have seen the Times in recent months, the headline is pure spin, plain and simple. During the Bush administration, the headline would surely read something like this: "Bush blind to worsening economy."

MSNBC.com

Obama's promises a work in progress. The President has been in office for nearly seven months, during which time our nation's woes have gotten worst, not better, thanks to Obama's policies. Still, like the New York Times, the folks at NBC continue to push this opinion that given enough time, Obama's brilliant policies will bring us to Utopia. Again, during a Republican administration the headline would be "After Seven Months in Office, President's Policies a Failure."

CBS News

Sotomayor Battle Lines Set in Senate. The only thing keeping Ms. Sotomayor from her black rope is a quick Senate vote and a swearing-in by the Vice President. However, the main streamers continue to push the notion that the coronation would begin in earnest, if only the GOP would stop their pesky battle against the nominee. The woman is going to be confirmed; allowing the opposition to question the nominee's credentials isn't wrong, unruly or negative to the process. Rather, it is democracy.

ABCNews.com

Finally, we see how pictures can tell a bias. On ABC's political page, we are shown two distinct pictures.

1

In the first, we see the Democratic leadership heading out of the White House, above the text "White House calls the anger "manufactured"; protestors say its quite real. The politicians look engaged, concerned and in Chucky Schumer's case, smiling. You get the feeling (or rather, ABC hopes that you do), that these people care and are working hard to bring us utopia in health care. Contrast that with the second photo, of Sen. John McCain. McCain - like most Republicans - has announced his opposition to Sonia Sotomayor. Here we are presented with a photo of Arizona's senior Senator that just makes you wonder if the guy is of his right mind. He appears to be banging his hand on a large stack of paper (the health care plan?), as if he is angry about something.

The message? Good (Democrats) vs. Bad (Republicans).
