Azure was/still is a pigment made from ground lapis lazuli stone.

It was rare and much prized as makeup by the Egyptians and its desirability as “eye shadow” continued until the present day.

“Azure” is also used to describe a particular shade of blue, just as “crimson” is used to describe a particular shade of red.
