You are in error. The requirement is to be a "natural born citizen" ~ not that he must actually be born in the USA. You can presently be born outside the USA and if one of your parents is a US citizen you will qualify. Not so long ago if you were born outside the USA to a foreign mother, or father, you were not automatically a US citizen.

There's been little done in the way of court cases or statutes to hedge in and qualify what "natural born" really means.

You’re correct about one thing, there is no legislation and no Supreme Court decisions on this issue. US law defines “Citizen at Birth” pretty carefully but the term “Natural Born Citizen” has never been further defined.

Its a shame that the current Supreme Court has thus far rejected for lack of standing hearing every case attempting to apply the natural born citizen clause in Article Two Section One with specific regard to Barack Obama.
By refusing to hear any suits challenging Obama’s eligibility, the Supreme Court is in effect saying that Citizens by birth qualify as Natural Born Citizens.

#177:

My Civics class taught us that the Constitution meant that to be a natural-born citizen meant that you had to be born on US soil and that included military installations outside the US if both (?) parents were US citizens.
