The image of the United States in the minds of Mexican citizens has skyrocketed in the past year — rebounding to positive levels not seen since the American invasion of Iraq, according to the Pew Global Attitudes Project survey on international attitudes.
The favorable image of the United States has soared in Mexico from 47 percent to 69 percent since Barack Obama replaced George W. Bush as president.
A year ago, just 16 percent of Mexicans said they trusted the United States to do what’s right in international affairs.
This year, 55 percent of Mexicans had faith in American foreign policy.
Pew Research Center president Andrew Kohut said the poll “reflects a revival of America’s global image ... reflecting confidence in Barack Obama.”
Mexicans historically have been supportive of the United States, but views about their northern neighbor dropped significantly over the past decade.
In the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks, that number stood at 64 percent, but it bottomed out last year 17 percentage points lower.
In the final year of the Clinton administration, 68 percent of Mexicans had a favorable view of the United States — a number not matched until the first year of the Obama presidency.
There was only one sour sign in Mexican attitudes toward America.
The percentage of Mexicans who view U.S. economic influence as a negative jumped from 49 percent to 58 percent in the past year, the main reason being the deep recession gripping Mexico.
