Catholic charities align with anti-life proposals

American Life League says two prominent Catholic charities have "divorced themselves" from church teaching in supporting the Obama administration's healthcare proposal.

The two charities -- the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Catholic Health Association -- recently released a notice to their members encouraging them to support healthcare reform. "We must maintain momentum for health care reform efforts with calls and emails [to members of Congress] supporting health care reform immediately," the notice read.

In addition, the Catholic Health Association developed a video for YouTube that shows people displaying messages in support of healthcare reform.

But American Life League president Judie Brown says the healthcare bill is contrary to Catholic teaching in several areas. For example, she points out, it will require taxpayers to pay for abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy. The healthcare proposals also include forms of euthanasia -- end-of-life care -- that she argues actually translate into ending life care.

It’s things like this that make me so less likely to donate money to Catholic causes.

No more money in the envelope for SVDP from me, until they change their position.

Then again, maybe I’ll just put in 30 silver dimes.

I donate directly for the maintenance of the church I attend and that’s it - oh, and our pastor relies upon donations so I donate to his support since I really value him. Not to anyone else even though we have a conservative archbishop.

As a Protestant, I've long admired the strength and unity of the Catholic church.

But over the last few years, as I've learned how socialism has taken over the theological seminaries and has infested the pulpits, I'm becoming as disgusted with the Catholic church as I already am with much of the Protestant churches.

Beware the wolves in sheep's clothing.

An unfortunate result of liberation theology.
They seem to think that Obamacare is a simple extention of charity and should be embraced.
It is NOT!
It is a wealth transfer mechansim designed to increase government control AND RESTRICT ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE!
There is no charity in providing an insurance card and pretending that is “healthcare”.

To an extent, that's on the wane, depending on where you are of course. It was far worse in the 70's and 80's. The men ordained in those years have no clue how to give a sermon, either.

Here, the president of Catholic Charities was removed for just such support and replaced with a priest's priest, a really good guy. St. Vincent de Paul is largely run at the parish level on a cash and food basis with volunteer time from the parishioners. I thought that was the way it is everywhere. I guess not. But, because of the way the Church is more of a confederation than a top down corporation, blanket statements can't be made about the entire church.

Truth be told, we have a little problem with a whole very vocal faction not thinking through what we call "social justice" issues and making bad decisions as a result. This is just further evidence that education and critical thinking is severely lacking at this time in history.

I am the VP (and former pres.) of our local SVdP.

Their fig leaf of protection is that they don’t support any specific bill, just the concept of “reform.” Therefore, they can claim they don’t support pro-abort legislation.

Other than yearly dues of $150, none of our money goes to “National.” SVdP still helps people locally, and I would encourage those who don’t want any money to go to national, to just suggest the local conference disengage, and go independent (which is not normally a Catholic instinct, but SVdP is not part of the official Church structure).

Also, you can still donate actual food to the food drives, etc. and that should make sure your donation is used as intended.

“Conservative archbishop” can be a misnomer. They might say all the right things on life issues and use excommunication more forcefully, but those headlines can mask a host of much worse problems. Our most recently departed archbishop is a hero to the vocal pro-life crowd, but behind the scenes it's a much different story and he was definitely NOT a fiscal conservative on non-essentials.

I was depressed to note that more of the Catholics who showed up at the 2008 Presidential polls voted for Obama than for anybody else — that’s more than a “little” problem!

Of course this doesn’t speak of anything more than the RCC in America in this day. Of the worldwide organization or of other ages it tells nothing.

For the record, I am an evangelical in a fundie church.

sounds like the heads of these ‘Catholic’ organisations, will be having a knee slapping old good time while sharing a beer with Fr. Jenkins, of Notre Dame (ala zer0bama, Henry Louis Gates and Sergeant James Crowley ).

(official excommunication time needed from Ratzinger....)
