In a rare disclosure of sensitive family-planning statistics, the state-run China Daily newspaper blamed ignorance about contraception for the figure. It described the widespread use of abortion as "unfortunate and avoidable" but did not clarify whether the number was rising.
Wu Shangchun, a Family Planning official, said research showed 62 per cent of women undergoing abortions were under 29 and usually single.
She added that the real total may be far higher since a large number of abortions were performed in unregistered clinics, especially in the countryside. A further ten million "morning after" contraceptive pills are sold each year.
At Beijing's Anzhen Hospital, nurses said the real total was much higher than the government statistic. "We do not have time to count the numbers, but there are far more than that," said one nurse, who asked not to be named.
Outside the hospital's woman-only obstetrics and gynaecology unit, a stream of patients arrive for the procedure each day, which costs roughly £53. Several women said abortions were now painless and only required only half an hour's rest to recuperate.
Du Yanting, 23, said: "I had an abortion three years ago. At the time, it was impossible for me to get married. My boyfriend didn't want to and we were too young. It's very common now, especially in the big cities, because we are more open-minded and there has been a change in attitude towards sex and marriage. We don't even talk about it, it's just like any other woman's problem."
A recent survey carried out by a prominent hospital in Shanghai showed only 30 per cent of callers to a hotline knew how to avoid pregnancy and only 17 per cent took precautions against venereal disease.
