Democrats urge GOP to back Sotomayor
Breitbart (AP) ^ | 7/29/2009 | Julie Hirschfeld Davis

The Senate debate over Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor turned bitter Wednesday, after Democrats warned the GOP it would pay a steep price for opposing the judge who would be the first Hispanic justice, and a top Republican charged they were playing destructive racial politics.

Majority Leader Harry Reid implored Republicans Wednesday to join Democrats in voting to confirm Sotomayor next week, warning that GOP opposition would bring the same sort of public backlash that followed the party's spirited opposition to measures that would have given some illegal immigrants a chance to gain legal status.

"I just think that their voting against this good woman is going to treat them about the same way that they got treated as a result of their votes on immigration," said Reid, D-Nev.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the head of his party's Senate campaign committee and a Sotomayor opponent, shot back that Reid and other Democrats were trying to exploit the nomination and "giving cover to groups and individuals to nurture racial grievances for political advantage."

"I don't think it influences people's votes, but what it does encourage is a very poisonous—indeed a very toxic—tone of destructive politics," Cornyn told The Associated Press. "They ought to be ashamed of themselves."

Reid's comments and the heated response they drew highlight the incendiary political dynamics surrounding next week's vote to confirm President Barack Obama's first high court nominee, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who was raised in a South Bronx housing project and educated in the Ivy League before spending 17 years on the federal bench. There is little doubt that Sotomayor, 55, will be confirmed with majority Democrats backing her solidly and a handful of Republicans joining them.

Yea, right Harry. If you really believed this, you would be cheering on the GOP to oppose her. Besides, where do you get off telling the GOP how to vote? Are you going to take away their committee assignments? You can only do that to your Dems as you threaten and keep them on your plantation, remember?

A vote for Sotomayor is racist....and if any GOP senator thinks that their base is not as important as 1/3 of the Hispanic vote....then I hope they are planning their retirement from politics

"They ought to be ashamed of themselves."

Does Coryn seriously think they understand the concept of shame?

No way!

If the GOP is smart, yes, I know, I’m asking for a miracle, the GOP will stand together and vote NO!

Dems don’t need sinlge GOP vote to get her in. They want to drag the GOP down with them. No way.

Agreed. Vote NO or plan on going out of the congress. The entire congress might need to be wiped. Clean out the crooks from the barn.

She is clueless about the constitution and she wants to subvert it based on emotion. The argument that she is just replacing another liberal justice so the GOP should not fight this is so asinine on so many levels. What if another justice decides to step down, becomes ill and cannot continue, or dies then BO is appointing a second liberal justice. The whole congress should be fighting this because she is not qualified to be sitting on the Supreme Court. This is just BO and the democrats race pandering in the worst possible way. The GOP as a whole needs to stand up to this or they are going to keep getting rolled for the next 4 years if in 2010 they do not win back the majority.

Yes , your right on that one. The hell with the rat. They are all crooks, baby killing liars, depraved, immoral bastards. They line up behind this pied piper of Marxism and follow him into the black hole from where he came.

But we do not have to follow

I can’t remember if the GOP issued the same warning to the Dims when Bork, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito were nominated for the bench. I’m kidding, I know they didn’t. I do know that President Zero stated that, as a Senator, he knew Roberts and Alito were extremely qualified for the bench, and he voted against them anyway. Dims have no shame....

let’s see = it’s racial when it’s Sotomayor, but not when it’s Estrada. yep - that makes perfect sense — if you are a Dem.

Mexican voters that like Sotomayor and are paying attention are liberals anyway. They will always vote for the rats. There must be some Republican Hispanics that understand what America and the constitution stands for which is why they want to live here.

R's show deference to the D President's nominee and likely vote "aye".
D's show disdain and disrespect to the R President's nominee and likely vote "nay".

It is all very symmetrical, isn't it.
