Denials are all Sen. Dodd has left
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | July 29, 2009 | Editorial

Of course Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd continues to deny he knew he was getting preferential treatment from subprime lender Countrywide Financial in 2003 when he got sweetheart mortgages totaling nearly $800,000.

Just as he denied knowing anything about his "stimulus" amendment that guaranteed huge bonuses, financed with your tax dollars, to his sugar daddies at AIG Financial Services.

Just as he continues to deny getting his too-good-to-be-true deal on his Irish "cottage" and denies lying on his financial-disclosure forms about that crooked transaction.

Just as he continues to deny his wife got lucrative jobs on corporate boards solely because he is a U.S. senator peddling his influence.

Just as he now denies meeting with lobbyists, except in places away from the public's view where he can put the arm on them for nearly a half-million dollars (so far) in contributions for his re-election campaign while he writes loophole-riddled "reform" legislation aimed at their industries.

And just as he denies his role in creating the housing bubble that begat the Chris Dodd Bear Market that begat the Wall Street meltdown that begat recession that begat economic misery for and scrambled the nest eggs of countless millions of Americans.

No, against all evidence to the contrary, Sen. Dodd continues to deny the truth about his Countrywide loans because congressional ethics rules prohibit him from accepting special perks or deals unavailable to the public.

Should the Senate Ethics Committee find him guilty, it could recommend his censure and thereby uphold a family tradition. But denial is entirely in keeping with Sen. Dodd's duplicity.

From the beginning, he denied getting preferential treatment and even denied knowledge of Countrywide's "Friends of Angelo" VIP mortgage program, named for then-CEO Angelo Mozilo who has been charged with civil fraud and insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Later, Sen. Dodd admitted he knew he was getting "enhanced customer service," but still denied getting sweetheart mortgages.

For months after news of his sweetheart mortgages broke in June 2008, he claimed he couldn't come clean because he was having trouble getting mortgage documents from Countrywide; these were papers borrowers routinely keep in their own files or could get in a matter of days simply by calling their lenders. In February, when he finally gave reporters a peek — but only a peek — at his loan records, the packet included an "independent report" he commissioned that included a "(d)etailed evaluation of the original underwriting loan files." The report was dated July, 22, 2008, meaning he had the documents all along.

But it must be noted Sen. Dodd's unconvincing denials have never come under oath, unlike the recent testimony of Robert Feinberg, a former Countrywide VIP program loan officer who handled Sen. Dodd's mortgages.

Mr. Feinberg told the Ethics Committee that Sen. Dodd knew full well what was going on; that he was a "Friend of Angelo" who was getting a "suite of advantages" that included discounts on rates, fees and points worth about $75,000; that Countrywide counted both of Sen. Dodd's homes as primary residences, which is not allowed under laws written by the Senate Banking Committee now chaired by Sen. Dodd, to get around equity issues and enable lower rates.

Mr. Feinberg told other congressional investigators that Countrywide extended special deals to another member of "the most ethical Congress in history," Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of South Dakota.

Of course, it is in Mr. Feinberg's best interests to tell the truth, lest he be hauled before a judge on charges he lied to Congress. By the same token, it is in Sen. Dodd's best interests to continue to dissemble and cover up, at least until he swears to tell the committee the truth.

Why, with all things he doesn’t/didn’t know, he sounds almost too IGNORANT to respresent Connecticut as one of their senators!

;^)

He is pretty much finished. The question is....will the democrats come up and tell him to drop his campaign next year so a better choice can run or just let him lose to a Republican?

I think Dodd need to become MORE EMPHATIC!!

And,lets not forget Dodd’s outright lie about the AIG bonus fiasco.

After he denied it, the truth emerged that Dodd specifically inserted language into the ARRA bill which authorized the AIG bonus payments. Obama turned it into an AIG demonization session, in order to cover up the fact that it was democrats ineptitude or, more likely, AIG influence over Dodd that got the language in there in the first place.

Obama always goes for the demonization strategy to get things — he always needs an evil strawman to knock down.

His list so far:

- Bush
- The “rich”
- Oil companies
- Pharmaceutical Firms
- the elderly (though the stupid AARP appears to be buying into his BS)

Recent additions:
- physicians
- cops

.. though he is trying to make nice with those two groups now.

Favored groups:
- public unions, esp the NEA
- UAW
- welfare moms
- people who pay no taxes

Favored groups get money from Obama. Everyone though will be taxed, but especially the evil “rich.”

Of course being a leftist/dem, denials are all he needs. “I’m innocent!” The media informs us of his innocence and we all move on!!!

Dodd is a perfect example of the results of apathy. I’d bet the SOB gets reelected.

Thanks for the ping Graybeard.

I hope that Dodd stays in the race. He’s our best hope of unseating an incumbent.
