Pa. tax burden has risen 49 percent in 10 years ("Pennsylvanians are not overtaxed")

HARRISBURG — If you work, own a home, drive, smoke cigarettes, drink liquor or buy tires — and even when you die — there's a tax bill to pay to state or local governments in Pennsylvania.

The per capita tax burden in Pennsylvania, 11th highest in the nation, increased steadily during the past 10 years, according to figures from the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit research group in Washington. The amount Pennsylvanians pay — $4,463, annually — is for each man, woman and child.

"Pennsylvanians pay about two-thirds of that to their own state and local governments," said Bill Ahern, spokesman for the Tax Foundation. "They pay about one-third to other state and local governments" in taxes such as out-of-state sales taxes or property taxes on vacation properties in other states.

The amount actually going into accounts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, school districts, county and city governments, townships or boroughs every year comes from $3,054 paid by each resident.

The figures shed light on the budget battle playing out at the Capitol over higher taxes and state spending. The budget impasse is in its 29th day today. Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell has sought a 16-percent increase in the state income tax, but he has been unable to garner sufficient support even in the Democratic-controlled state House. Senate Republicans insist on no broad-based state taxes and a budget that spends less than last year's.

Hundreds of angry state workers staged a protest on the state Capitol steps Tuesday, chanting "We want paid" and "Do your job."

Heck, to a liberal you’re undertaxed if you dare have a dollar of disposable income.

Progressives, both Democrat and POS Republicans, rape your wallet and your future.

When will you stop them? Take action.

Totally irrelevant comment: Our call center’s 800# is one digit off from the PA DOR 800#. We get a few of their calls every week.

Expecting Democrats to lower taxes is like expecting a Baptist to take up drinking

My take is - if you can't spell and use proper English you don't get paid.

Limit their terms. If it will not be done through legislation, it will be done through your vote.

No, actually, I think that is a Central/Western PA colloquialism, which means:

"I want [to be] paid!"

Other examples: "My car needs [to be] washed" or 'That fence needs [to be] mended".

Philly woulda said:

'Youse guyz need to do yer job!"

One, two, three, four...
Hrmm!
One, two, (one, two, three, four!)

Let me tell you how it will be;
There’s one for you, nineteen for me.
‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Should five per cent appear too small,
Be thankful I don’t take it all.
‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman.

(if you drive a car, car;) - I’ll tax the street;
(if you try to sit, sit;) - I’ll tax your seat;
(if you get too cold, cold;) - I’ll tax the heat;
(if you take a walk, walk;) - I’ll tax your feet.

Taxman!

‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Don’t ask me what I want it for, (ah-ah, mister Wilson)
If you don’t want to pay some more. (ah-ah, mister heath)
‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Now my advice for those who die, (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes. (taxman)
‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman.

And you’re working for no one but me.

Taxman!

My wife and I moved to Alaska from western pa in early 90's. Even back then, I noticed around 15 gran in savings from local & state taxes; there are none in Ak. Heck, we don't even have prop taxes, we live so far out. No sales, income, or all the host of user fees, ect you are showered with in Pa. $4400/person, unreal.

I miss the sports, relatives, food; but could never live back east ever again, have way too much freedom in Alaska. I can't figure how Pennsylvanians can remain with their heads in the sand while taxes go thru the roof. I met Palin first around 95 and watched her really shake things up; you need another Palin down there; or maybe not? Friends tell me it's a different place than when we lived there. I know I could never live there again, but still watch all the Steelers, Pens, and local WPIAL HS sports on dir tv.

Back in mid 90's, I ordered a new trk in Pa. They tried charging me 2 gran in state sales taxes; until I produced my AK residency papers. The dealership acted as though I was taking money outta their pocket, ha. Boy, it's really bad when the businesses are pro tax.

A friend once told me someday, Ak will have all kinds of taxes too; but resources will continue to fund Ak for my grandkids too; most still undeveloped; so I don't think that will ever happen; especially with the mindset up here. But, even if they ever did raise taxes, they still couldn't drive me outta here; it's the country & freedom that stuns me.

Actually, "We want paid" is a very simple phrase that is easily understood anywhere in the English speaking world. They not only say it in Philly, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, but also Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India and across the entire US. Even people who don't understand English are familiar with the phrase, often more so than people whose primary language is English. There is no need for colloquial clarification. The meaning is universal and unambiguous.
