[... I just want him out of power so that God can once more be spoken of in public!...]

Every knee shall bow and every tongue will
confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

And we love liberators, no matter what their faith. ;-)

I don’t drink soda, so why should I care? Let them tax it.

Screw dat. It's bad enough with alcohol and cigarettes.

Oh, wait. You were being sarcastic. Sorry bout dat.

I think your right. Its more than just diet and exercise. I don’t think anyone has gotten past the diet and exercise theory to actually study this though.

I don’t usually up on my tin-foil hat, but I do for this issue. I think it isn’t being studied because the answer is known and (to fix it) would drive up food prices astronomically. It may involve halting the use of certain hormones in livestock. This, in turn, might make it difficult to feed the population in a cost effective manner.

If you look at photos of college kids from the early 60s vs. today, the ones from today look (not are, but look) like absolute (misshapen) buffoons. It really jumps out at you. My gut tells me that the health problems from obsesity will dwarf those from smoking.

Hate to tell you, but I really don’t think Diet Coke helps that much. I know tons of overweight or obese people who drink DC. It may slow things down a little, but not much. My advice: drop Sodas all together, & drink Gatorade. Also, try protein bars for lunch. One will fill you till dinner.

Sound advice. Sure DC may not matter at all and for me it is all I drink except for the occasional coffee and glass of water. But I am curious about what has been going on - I graduated HS in 1984 and out of a class of 230 or so, there may have been 5 people that were what was considered at the time overweight/obese. Now since I am involved in scouting as a leader, I see a lot of kids and the percentages are around 30-40%! So, what has changed in 25 years?

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a three-cent tax would generate $24 billion over the next four years, and proponents of the tax argued before the committee that it would lower consumption of sugary drinks and improve Americans' overall health.

If it were to raise $24B in four years at 3 cents a pop, then each every resident of the U. S. would be drinking 650 sodas a year. Is that a reduction from current consumption?

Another aspect that you need to consider is that historically we were a farming culture, folks toiled with very hard labor. Now we are a culture that sits at computers and we have a lot of technology that elimated a lot of labor.

Yes, I know that is a very broad generalization, but the fact remains that we work less laborously as a society today, therefore less calories are burned.

Personally, I live close enough to my job that I walk to work and I also have really tightened my budget, therefore I my food consumption is very planned and very strict. I’m not fat or obese, but really pretty normal. However, if I didn’t walk and ate whatever whenever, I could see a few pounds gathering very quickly.

Good luck to you and yours.

Yeah, I first started noticing the trend in the mid-90s, when my son was in Boy Scouts. Again, working at a University, I see it nearly every day. As a kid, I was kind of a lard ass in that I ate lots of crap and watched way too much TV—but you could count my ribs till my mid-20s. I think if I tried the same thing today, I’d be obese. My wife thinks it growth hormones in the livestock and I think she may be on to something.

Diet Coke? Blech. Diet Pepsi on the other hand - I can drink 6 or 7 cans of that stuff in a day ;)

I also find the regular sugared soft drinks overly sweet, and I’m pretty sure that if I drank the same amount of them that I do the diet stuff that all that sugar would not do me any good. Of course, I could always switch to healthier drinks, like green tea and water. But I like my Diet Pepsi.

Growth hormones, and high fructose corn syrup as sweeteners instead of sugar. If you've never read Fat Land, check it out-it blames HFCS, additives, "vanity sizing" in clothes (today's size 6 would have been at least a 10 or 12 in 1983), and ever increasing portion sizes.

tax tax tax
and when they aren’t collecting enough from soda, they will move onto something that more people are using.

I have a better idea. Why doesn’t government not tax any food or drink or pay any attention to how we live our lives?

For that matter, the American people should learn to mind their own business and not concern themselves with how their neighbors look, what they eat, or how much they exercise.

Oh, and skinny people die younger.

Obesity Police’s Shaky Science

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bal-op.fat29jul29,0,2610111.story

I am sick to death of the attacks on fat people. I feel especially bad for overweight kids. They are bullied and abused unmercifully, and society at large encourages it. Cruelty is not a virtue.

If the magic pill is ever invented that will do away with obesity, what will naturally thin people do with their moral superiority halos?

If it saves the life of just one child, then I’m all for a ban on drinking sodas in public, even indoors.

At least it’ll cut down the public belching and burping and the corresponding depreciation of our air quality.

Look how the smoking bans for adults in bars have really cut down on childhood asthma!
