With his phone calls to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge police sergeant James Crowley last week, Barack Obama seems to have defused the furor over his comment that Crowley had acted "stupidly" in handcuffing Gates on his own front porch. (I agree with Obama' final verdict, which is that Crowley did overreact, even if it appears that Gates got hysterical.) It may be that Obama was admirably taking advantage of what he calls "a teachable moment," and showing America that racial disputes can lead to dialogue and not just name-calling. But Obama was also mindful of what has become a favorite line of attack among post-Bush conservatives: the aggrieved white guy.

CAUTION: completely unbiased Kool-Aid drinking metrosexual jouranalist at work-carrying 0's water!
Why is this not laughable? Think like they do, hypersensitive to race and offense of such. A beer and we will all be buddies? What if he was a white President and called the southern black proffessor, inviting him over for fried chicken and watermelon? The networks would rake him over the coals!
Invite the Irish cop from Boston over for a beer? Good thing this guy does not live in his stereotypes...
wow...I missed that one!
Michael Crowley - an elitist snob. I’m above the law.
Hey New Republic - why is it that people like “Skip” Gates can say “your mama” to a police officer - one who came to defend Gates’ life and property at the risk of his own. Gates curses the officer’s mother. Why no mention of this.
No racial profiling. The liberals are angry that the cop didn’t stand there and be called a racist and have his mother cursed and walk away.
Back in the day where I grew up, if anyone spoke like this to a cop they would be missing a few teeth.
Gates made this a minstrel show. He goaded them into the arrest. You cannot curse police officers, nor their mothers and expect to walk away. It was an awful exhibition, even the black cop admitted it and said the Crowley was in the right.
I have worn matching silver bracelets for saying much less than that to a cop.
