Yes; I would too. At least this is one loose factoid that can be dismissed; the cops did not know the race when they went to the house. So Gates' immediate assumption -- "Why? because I'm a black man?" was pure hubris.
Along comes a white cop trying to protect Skip's home from another possible break in and he tries on his protected status with "calling the police officer a racist, yelling so loudly the officer couldn't conduct an investigation."
Of course little Skippy "called Sgt. Crowley a 'rogue' policeman who acted out of racial bias."
An interesting tidbit from the article:
I think when we hear the tapes (why can a newspaper hear them and not us???) we will hear Skip (I like calling him his pet white name, it makes him seem so nice and innocent, kinda like calling a Markist "Barry") reverting to kind with his "yo mamma" comment and his other racist white hating rants. In a second audiotape, of radio transmissions between Sgt. Crowley and the dispatcher, the officer can be heard speaking in calm, measured tones. At one point, he describes Mr. Gates as uncooperative and tells the dispatcher to "keep the cars coming."
On at least two occasions, a voice is heard in the background. It is unclear whether it belongs to Mr. Gates or what the person is saying. Mr. Gates, a renowned Harvard University professor, didn't return calls for comment.
