WITH polls showing a drop in President Obama's job rating and sinking support for the Democrats' health-care plans, there is evidence of collateral damage where you might not expect to find it: in the standing of Democratic governors.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell suddenly is getting negative job ratings in both the Quinnipiac University and the Franklin & Marshall College polls -- his lowest marks in seven years. Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, who has spent most of his first term working amicably with Republican legislators, scores less than 50 percent in the latest Quinnipiac poll and has only tenuous leads over two Republicans, John Kasich and Mike DeWine, who may run against him next year.
In the two gubernatorial races being contested this year, Republicans seem to have advantages. In Virginia, Republican Bob McDonnell has led Democrat Creigh Deeds in all but one poll and picked up the support of Black Entertainment Television billionaire Sheila Johnson, one of the biggest contributors to the incumbent, Democratic National Chairman Tim Kaine.
New Jersey incumbent Jon Corzine, who spent more than $100 million on narrow wins for senator in 2000 and governor in 2005, is 15 points behind Republican Chris Christie. Corzine will not be helped by the indictment of multiple Jersey pols, most of them Democrats, in a case initiated by Christie when he was a US attorney.
There's an argument that these results hold little relevance to the standing of the national parties. Almost every state faces severe fiscal problems, and standoffs between a governor and a legislature can drag the governor's ratings way down, as in the case of California's Arnold Schwarzenegger. Moreover, a governor's personal strengths and weaknesses can override party identification; one of the nation's highest-rated governors is Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat in very Republican Wyoming.

Speaking as someone who now lives in Wyoming and who has heard “Governor Dave” speak on many occasions, I can tell you why Dave Freudenthal is popular in Wyoming:
The man knows something about running a business, having grown up on a farm in Wyoming. He knows stats and figures about the business environment in Wyoming and the nation off the top of his head, he knows stats and facts about the coal situation in the US, power generating consumption of coal in the US, you name it. The man’s command of facts and figures is very impressive, and then to his credit he says “These are the facts we have to deal with.”
When I say he knows facts and figures - he ain’t pulling them off some cheat sheet. No, you can run into Governor Dave on the street, ask him a question and he knows them off the top of his head. He’s fiscally conservative and backs up his talk with real action. He’s pro-gun, pro-property rights, pro-business. He’s had the balls to take on the environmentalists over wolves, which is a big issue in the west but in Wyoming especially.
Overall, he has one trait in politics which is rare: he walks his talk. You might not like his position on issue “X” exactly, but when you wake up tomorrow, his position on issue “X” hasn’t changed because someone wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post attacking him (eg, on wolves).
Look for 2010 to make 1994 look like a day at the beach.
If Scott can even substantially cut in to the lead in Milwaukee County (possibly win it, he is that popular there) he will win the State.
Wisconsin is a very weird State though, it has been leaning more Dem in the past ten years, so I won't hold my breath, but Doyle's minions have already started reelection ads touting what a great guy he is, and the Dem party is already issuing press releases every time Scott Walker speaks about anything. So they know Doyle is vulnerable.
You know if people are already trying to protect Obama and say that these results do not reflect on his leadership, these two Democrat Governors are toast in 2009. You don’t cut the legs out from under candidates by starting damage control this early unless you really think they have no chance.
Exactly! If we don't stop ACORN, it won't make any difference who the people want to elect. You can bet they're already at work in PA covering Fast Eddie's butt, especially with absentee ballots. I think that's how they stole Alaska and Minnesota in 2008.

I haven’t heard anything lately, but I did hear a few weeks ago that the GOP was running one of the Tommy Thompson crowd (Newman/Neuman?) in the primary against Walker.
Last time, The GOP publicly withdrew money from Walker in the last few months of the campaign, then, after the PR damage was done, reinstated a portion of it. Of course, that killed his candidacy. According to his campaign workers, their internal polls were very favorable for Walker up to that point.
Walker is almost unknown outside of Milwaukee County except as a Christian, pro-life conservative, the exact terms that will terrify the GOP, as well as the leftists who really control everything. They will work to divide the vote to insure Doyle wins...............again. Even though he has stolen funds, misused funds, betrayed his academic base and lied about everything to everyone. He is a connected Democrat and the media will see to it that he wins.
We are still screwed, up here.

I live in a county that has voted Republican every year since the 1800's so I just don't get the appeal of the Dems?
Rendell’s damage is brought on by his own idiocy and arrogance and has nothing to do with Obama’s idicoy and ignorance.
They just happen to share the same party.
Fast Eddie is painting himself into a corner with the PA Budget mess. He should take credit for it and not just blame it on the hate Democrats are receiving as of late.
While being tied to Fauxbama certainly hasn't helped him Fast Eddie's in trouble because of his own actions... for the 7th year in a row he has intentionally created a budget impass in order to try to force things through he wants.. and state workers haven't been paid. Prior to fast eddie this only happened 7 times in the history of the state, since Fast Eddie this has happened nearly every year.
Not to mention the state is broke, he spent like a sailor when times were good, and now that they aren't, he's trying to raise taxes to cover shortfalls etc.
He's gone to the well one too many times, and his political career in PA is over one way or another.
I can't speak for OH, but I suspect the governor there has his own mess seperate from Fauxbama as well.
I think the change to donk is thru new people moving in. I am in the SW portion of the state and we have had an influx of retirees and young professionals and they changed our voting patterns from GOP to Dem.
I will vote for Scott. I voted for Mark Green because I always vote R, but I had no illusions. He has no charisma and never got his message out there. But I watched what the GOP did to Scott last time and it just was so infuriating. The elderly (the majority of the GOP out here) loved Tommy Thompson and are just reflexive voters who don’t pay much attention to anything except the MSM. They love their luncheons and conventions and only all turn out if Tommy makes an appearance.
I just hope enough people are afraid and angry to get rid of Doyle. They will never get rid of Finegold or Kohl or my critter, Ron Kind. The only Republicans they routinely vote for are the State Assembly and Senate. I just do not understand it at all.
On Friday, I heard Rush allude to a sex scandal, a la Spitzer,involving a gov. from a blue state. He gave a few hints, one being that some eagles live there. Has to be Rendell.
There has been no public sex scandal about Rendell, but it wouldn’t be suprising. Many elected officials in PA are fooling around and its only the most naive don’t know it.
The Dems are actually in pretty bad shape here, between the fiscal fiasco and desire to raise taxes and the corruption scandal that keeps on giving.
