From the article (which I finally decided to read):
Some have argued that the Republican partnership never was a love marriage, but rather a marriage of convenience, a coalition born of the need to counteract decades of Democratic dominance. Call me a romantic, but I don't believe that is so.

I do. (giggle--a sort of little joke there, since the article is discussing "political marriages") But, I do believe it. I still say that there is simply a loosely connected collection of voters who, for whatever reasons, do not want to vote third party and will not vote for the dims.
