New York state Sen. Darrel Aubertine (D) has decided not to run in the special election for Army Secretary-designate John McHughs (R-N.Y.) seat, leaving Democrats without their leading potential recruit in a big special election.
Aubertine played coy up until the 5 p.m. Thursday deadline for candidates to announce their intention to seek the Democratic nomination. But now he has released a statement saying he will continue working in the state Senate.
My priority must continue to be the work I have started in the state Senate, representing Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, Aubertine said in the statement, according to the Albany Times-Union. My commitment is to the people of the 48th Senate District and has been all along. Before I could even consider the possibility of serving another eight counties, I had a duty to finish out this years session.
Republicans nominated state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava on Wednesday, and the Democrats are expected to decide on a nominee in the coming weeks.
National Republicans already spent money attacking Aubertine in ads and robocalls. Democrats will hail the investment as wasted money on a candidate who didnt wind up running; Republicans will say it played into Aubertines decision not to run.
Aubertine decried the early ads in his statement.
National Republicans have demonstrated their belief that party registration matters more than the issues by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to attack and vilify me, he said.
When is the election? A GOP pick up would be good. this year hoopefully.
bttt
And the election is not set until McHugh resigns from his seat.
Dede Scozzafava: She has been NARAL endorsed for the legislature, signed the NARAL pledge, 100% pro-abort voting record. Publicly supports so-called gay marriage.
So it is a lost seat even if the RINO wins. The pro-life pro-gun DEM frontrunner dropped out today.
