The house happened to be owned by a black man.

If you mean Gates, he wasn't the owner of the house. He's the tenant of a house rented by the University. That, in itself, would have contributed a little bit of difficulty to the problem of trying to figure out who this guy is and does he really belong here. They had the University cops come over to sort it out.

Crowley said he called the campus cops to back him up more than to verify identity; a maintenance man arrived in the same time frame who knew Gates and I.D.’ed him.

From that point on residency was not in the equation; it became a clash of egos, made worse by a growing audience.

This set race relations back 50 years among the crusaders.

One day we may all remember our personal Crowley Moment.
