How exactly would you count these people? It's not like (I don't think) there's some kind of central registry where you sign up saying you're too discouraged to look for work.

For that matter, how do they count people who are actively looking for work?

I can see how lay-offs are counted and how new hires are counted. For the rest, does anyone know where the numbers come from?

Oh, but isn't that the dead give away that it is a lie, but don't expect so called journalists to check anything out.

I am no expert but I suspect that gummint has a firm number on the folkls they get FICA from. To single digits. I suspect they have a fair estimate of the number of folks present, from census info and the like. I suspect one can do some basic demographic research and extend the results intelligently and come up with a pretty fair estimate of what unemployment actually is. It would be interesting to see how this number varies from the published figures of folks applying for or receiving unemployment benefits.
