why would anyone go through the trouble to fake this in 1961?

Could have been the grandmother who sent the "announcement" to the newspaper.

Newspapers at the time probably published "news" of births as a service for proud parents and grandparents, NQA.

Perhaps the grandmother thought that by getting this in the newspaper, she could "create a record" for an otherwise, out-of-a-hospital, out-of-the-country, or out-of-wedlock birth. The thought that her grandchild might someday be president, did not cross her mind.

If you read the WND story, even WND reports that the “announcement” isn’t a paid announcement, it came straight from the Hawaii Dept. of Health Statistics. What WND doesn’t tell you is that the reports came straight from the Hawaii hospitals. Typical WND.
