Democrats have promised to make college education another taxpayer-financed entitlement, but some post-secondary schools appear to be more favored than others. Specifically, for-profit institutions are becoming political targets, notwithstanding their generally strong educational record.
Often called career colleges, for-profit schools don’t rank with the Ivies for prestige. But schools like Devry or Kaplan that specialize in computer technology, physical therapy and other tangible skills provide a valuable service in training young and even not-so-young people to compete in our information economy.

A well respected friend and physician told me just yesterday, that medical school should begin in Junior High, to shorten the time required, for those that know they wish a Medical career....this is the thinking and fast track of the Devry-type schools.... Why not the Ivies?
The fast track schools are a threat to the Ivy leagues.....and that is a fact that is hard to dispute.

I’ve worked with engineers with degrees from everywhere. Some of the brightest went to DeVry. And the only engineer I ever worked with who I thought was literally stupid went to U of Michigan - one of the top-rated engineering schools in the country.
Well they did have a massage therapy program...
DeVry cuts out all the garbage and focuses on the reality of doing/getting the job. People I know who graduate from these schools get jobs and do well.
They are much better off than wasting hours taking silly make-work classes that allegedly give one a “broad perspective”, can often work while attending, and come away with valuable, immediately applicable skills.
Public schools are a major shame in this country.
I’ve heard that from several doctors. You can teach iterations to first graders and there is no reason that math education need take as long as schools make it. I think medicine, along with much of what is taught in colleges can be handled and completed by HS.
It is part of the nanny state vicious circle that children remain children for so long. Kids are desperate to move into the adult world and sadly their only opportunities to be “adult” are through sex and alcohol/drugs.
We need to take the child away from the bureaucrats and return them to their parents - who are best placed to decide when they should work, drive or be educated and how.
Was the early 20th century such a bad place for children? Are they better off as dumbed down, ghetto talking, sex maniacs who are materialistic and dangerous to their fellow citizens?
Government fails at the margins and the marginal suffer the worst.

Why subject our best and brightest to the same old "bagObeans" teaching curriculum, techniques, and instructors that fail to teach even the brightest....year in and year out. I said YEARS!!!!
Accelerate the specialties....now.....should the student have a desire to pursue a particular career.
Hmmmmm, Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, Jay Rockefeller, Barbara Boxer, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Al Franken, Janet Napolitano, lawyers, journalists, economists, criminals, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

If Ivy League colleges had to meet the same requirements as these so-called business colleges with regards to post-graduation employment, the State run institutions would go bust.
I have a degree from a big name, Ivy, East Coast university (some might argue that I am a bad advertisement) but of late, my Associate degrees seems to carry more weight with potential clients/employers (I do project work) as they show a focus on technical skills.
My daughter married a plumber, a better deal that a college educated 'whatever' - at least his work will not be outsourced to India...
Enough said.
