Sad, yes. But freak accident?

Why do I get the idea that the words “Hold my beer” were uttered at some point during this incident?

Don’t use yourself as dead weight in the back of a moving pick up truck. I’ve ran into this scenario a couple of times over the years and stopped it from happening every time. Look for charges against the mother, the mattress probably bounced him out...

My BIL was seriously injured when he tried to be a paperweight on some industrial plastic sheeting as the wind came up. He was thrown something like 20 ft. in the air and ~100 ft away from where he started. Landed on his back.

There are plenty of things that can throw a full-grown adult around like a rag doll when the wind blows.

I wouldn't get too judgemental on these two. In hindsight, it seems so stupid, because the consequences were so severe. But at the time the decision was made, they probably both thought it was no big deal.

I've done stupider things before breakfast.

I was at a Mets game in the eighties and saw a grounds crew guy get tossed about 15 feet in the air rolling out the tarp for a windy rain delay.

He shook it off after a few seconds, to cheers from the crowd.

“Why does the peanut butter side of the bread land on the carpet?”
Because my Dogs will only eat the bread?

Freak accident, or accident waiting to happen.

Riding in the back of a pickup period is dumb-ass stupid.

I knew a guy that was riding in the back of a pickup, they hit a rough patch of road, and it bumped him up and out of the pickup bed. Killed him. Even sadder, his older brother was driving the truck.

All it takes is hitting one pot-hole to throw someone out. Riding in the back of a pickup is dumb under any circumstances.

His poor mom will never be the same.

I think it’s quite funny when I see people driving down the road with a mattresa AND boxsprings on their roof - and they are grabbing onto them from inside the car.

I had a job for a few months delivering mattresses and box springs for this... guy. The box springs lift and can take like sails, the mattresses bounce their way out. I only lost one in the brief time I worked for him, he tied it. I always overtie. If I can’t I wont load it.

I had a cousin who died sitting on a pile of plywood in a truck and the same thing happened to him.

I know that some years ago I was surprised by how easily a mattress that was fully in and below the rails of a pickup truck bed could be picked up by the wind. Luckily for us it happened as we were going up the ramp onto the highway, didn’t hurt anyone behind us, and we were able to go back and get it, undamaged. I forget what we did at that point - drove slower, I think. Personally I’m a firm believer in tarps and rope, on the assumption that just about anything loose in the bed of a truck will blow out (other than heavy, dense objects - which just tend to slide around and threaten to poke holes right through the walls of the box or tailgate, instead).

Wow, the compassion you show blinds me. If I say the world “asshat” but do not include your name, I’m hoping that will clear me of the mod’s wrath.

It’s ok to award Darwins to truly stupid adults, folks who have tried the “Hey, hold muh beer and watch this” tricks and lost, but to make fun of a 16 yr old is just cold. Almost beneath contempt, but not quite. So asshat will have to do. (and this goes for all the rest of you Darwin awarders!)

Except the beer, of course. The beer never blows out!
