WASHINGTON (Reuters) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said North Korea should not receive the attention it is seeking through behavior like missile launches and likened Pyongyang's behavior to that of unruly children.
North Korea tested a nuclear device in May and fired seven ballistic missiles earlier this month in defiance of a U.N. resolution.
"What we've seen is this constant demand for attention," Clinton, who is in India, said in an interview that aired on Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"And maybe it's the mother in me or the experience that I've had with small children and unruly teenagers and people who are demanding attention -- don't give it to them, they don't deserve it, they are acting out," she said.
Clinton also downplayed the threat that North Korea poses to the United States, saying: "They don't pose a threat to us. We know that our allies, Japan and South Korea, are very concerned."
Asked to elaborate on her remarks, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said North Korea "represents an infinitesimal threat to the United States directly."
"But clearly North Korea, and particularly its provocative actions, does represent a significant threat to the region. And its actions recently have been unhelpful, potentially destabilizing," he told reporters.

And nukes, and missiles.
We should have disengaged from Korea right after the Soviets fell. Korea by then was more than strong enough to take care of herself.
Don’t unruly children sometimes kill their parents? It never fails to amaze me how liberals underestimate everybody when it comes to their own safety. Naive at best—foolish at worst.
Don’t unruly children sometimes kill their parents?
They are "acting out" with nuclear weapons and could kill millions of South Koreans and Japanese even if their efforts are largely unsucessful but what the Hell, there is only infinitesimal threat to the United States directly.
“This is a very hazardous and ill-considered tactic.”
Agreed. I am not sure if I agree with your assumption about the allies - I am guessing you are referring to Red China and Russia. It’s not that I trust either one, I do not. They are going to do what they see as the most beneficial to them. I don’t have a clue how they would view it. I also believe North Korea’s leadership is unstable, as in mentally. They are also isolated. That in and of itself is a good reason not to taunt. That combination is dangerous. If I may respectfully ask you a question, how would NK’s allies profit by instigating trouble for us? I know the short answer, but surely they are aware of NK’s instability and the potential for things to spin out of control. If I were going to make trouble, I would pick a safer avenue. The US may be kind of screwed up now, but we are still the #1 super power militarily.-—JM
She is right—North Korea needs to be spanked and put in “Time Out” or maybe sent to Juvenile Hall. Maybe its time for a little “Child Abuse” when it comes to N. Korea.
Stupid liberal mindset on display. They are always condescending. It is their whole mindset, only they know best, only they can take care of us because we can’t do it ourselves. Now they a dumb enough to think of them as children. NK is an Adult and evil regime.
Looks like a fresh fill of Botox!
Well thats an absurd statement. But I will say this. IMO the threat of destruction of the U.S. by North Korea is lower than the threat of destruction of the U.S. by the Obama administration.
We should send them to bed without any supper!
Oops, wait a minute...
