LONDON, July 20 (Itar-Tass) - Georgia’s hopes of joining NATO are “almost dead,” which is tragic, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said in an interview with the U.S. Wall Street Journal Europe printed in London.

“It is tragic,” Saakashvili stressed. “It means the Russians fought for the right reasons,” he added. The newspaper noted that the Georgian leader referred to the situation around South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

NATO is the one of very few defense options for russian neighbors. The other would be a local/regional defense pact. Obama’s attempt to sell off Georgia and Ukraine in exchange for russian favors did not work quite well: russians snubbed him, pretty much. Therefore, given evidential US political weakness and NATO hesitation, the regional defense pact seems to be the only option remaining. The alternative would be a submission to russian hegemony again, which is equivalent to a suicide.

It was a lose-lose story. Russia got away with aggression, and we got stuck with Joe Biden a heartbeat away from the Presidency. (I think the crisis in Georgia last summer caused Obama to think he needed a foreign policy expert on the ticket, and not realizing that Joe Biden is an idiot in that field too picked him.)
