Had there been no a-bombs (or if they hadn’t been dropped) the Japanese were preparing for defense of the home islands; to give the US a taste of what that would have been like, the Japanese defense of Okinawa was ferocious. Even after the two a-bombs, there were officers who didn’t want Japan to surrender, but they failed in their de facto coup attempt. :’) Nevertheless, the fire-bombing from the air of more than forty cities in Japan didn’t bring about Japanese surrender, but the a-bombs did. The USSR’s involvement only happened after V-E day, and had little or no impact on the outcome of the war in the east — other than what parts of Japan got stolen by the Russkies. (’:
Soviet forces finished off Japanese forces in Manchuko. US had planned operation downfall for November of 1945.
