Quick Take: Hutchison's message is already getting lost in all the noise

AUSTIN – If Texas politics was a game about who has more money in the bank, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison would be leading. But in the expectations game played by Wall Street, those on blind dates and politicians, she's trailing Rick Perry in the GOP primary race for governor. She started out the year with a six-month head start to raise money, while Perry was tied up with the Legislature and prohibited from taking contributions.

In January, she had a 20-point lead in some polls. But that juggernaut has transformed itself into a maybe not.

Hutchison's problems were highlighted Monday. First, she broke the first rule of saving the candidate for important, statesmanlike events. Instead of a finance chairman or well-known supporter announcing her contribution totals, she did it herself.

Perry's camp had sent out a press release last week that said he raised $4.2 million in nine days. She personally touted that she has raised $6.7 million since January. The math? He raised $19,444 an hour; she took in $1,542.

She didn't mention that she had purposefully declined to take contributions of more than $100,000. Her campaign confirmed the limit later. And while she could have scored points about changing the Austin culture and special interests' influence, aides offered no explanation.

Then she intimated Perry had committed a crime, suggesting he was laying the groundwork for his contributions during the session. She offered no proof. His campaign immediately called her a liar. If she had a message, it was lost.

Yes, the election is nine months out. She's got $3 million more in the bank. She's got higher positive ratings from Republicans and lower negative ones. But this week, most politicians would rather be Perry than Hutchison.

And after Palin gets done with her, KBH will be a distant 3rd behind "none of the above".

I am so looking forward to the things Palin has to say when she’s no longer bound by the necessity to be a politically-correct elected official.

T-9 days and counting ...

Kay Bailey Hutchison ... the pro-abortion, pro-pornography, senator from American Airlines.

Perry should win rather easily once Sarah comes down to campaign.

I’m not real big on Perry, but KBH lost me for all time when she deep-sixed the double border fence in a midnight session.

Yeah, that one ticked me off too - Senate Amendment 2466: no fencing, physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras or sensors.

Then she voted for the bailout.

Then she had this to say about Palin:

When it comes down to it, Palin doesn’t know Eskimo from Alamo about Texas government and politics. What’s more, she is unlikely to care. ...

If Perry relies too heavily on Palin, he may find himself with a lot of time to watch Russians from her front porch come January 2011.

“If Perry relies too heavily on Palin, he may find himself with a lot of time to watch Russians from her front porch come January 2011.”

kbh doesn’t know that that was a Tina Fey SNL line and not anything Sarah said? Obviously, she gets her information from the msm.

I did not know she said that about Sarah. I just knew she was too lib in her votes. I don’t particularly like gov good hair, but I sure don’t want her as gov.

Interesting, I woke up this morning thinking about that very thing (call me strange) that we are on the countdown to Sarah’s freedom to say what she wants to say when she wants to say it.

And what a glorious day that will be. I can’t wait to see Sarah have her some RINOs for dinner.

Could we be lucky enough to see SNL do a skit about KBH that misquotes her and intentionally makes her look ignorant?

We have a whole 7 months of heated campaigning to go yet.
