I think that he was a fellow traveler. He probably became enamored of the Walter Duranty type journalists who were covering up the atrocities of the Stalin regime in the 1930’s, and was influenced by the strain of sympathies then fashionable among lefists who were exposed to the one world utopiaisms of the IWW types and the internationalist crowd. He was probably more of a dupe than a hard core idealogue.

Thanks for your response.

I keep thinking as I get older, how much I thought when I was younger, that these journalists at the top must be the Smart People, the Truth Tellers. Otherwise, how did they make it there?

How naive I was. Now I think about Cronkite's blowing of the Tet Offensive, and people like Tom Brokaw who admit that, after Obama was elected, they really don't know anything about him.

These guys, a lot of them anyway, just ain't all that bright or curious. And don't need any integrity.

They might have a knack for broadcasting and getting ratings, but aside from that, there doesn't need to be much "there" there.

Pretty pathetic. Especially considering those six- and seven-figure salaries.
