Medvedev stresses Islam’s importance for Russia

Russia's religious life is a multi-confessional one and Islam is a faith with a vast influence. So President Dmitry Medvedev said during a meeting with leaders of Russian Muslim organizations.

The statement was made as Medvedev was paying a visit to the country's central Mosque in Moscow to see ongoing reconstruction work.

After being shown around the historical part of the mosque and a section under construction, Medvedev met with muftis.

Medvedev stressed the importance of Islam in the country's internal affairs.

”Russia is a multi-national and multi-confessional country. Russian Muslims have enough respect and influence. Muslim foundations are making an important contribution to promoting peace in society, providing spiritual and moral education for many people, as well as fighting extremism and xenophobia,” he said before adding:

“There are 182 ethnic groups living in Russia, and 57 of them claim Islam as their main religion. This figure speaks for itself.”

The president also stressed the importance for religious Muslim organizations to have their own system of training imams and teachers, and promised the government would continue to assist in this work.

Though 1/3 of the ethnic groups may be Muslim, Muslims don't make up 1/3 of the population.

Wow. Everyone is afraid of Islam.

Either that or Obama dropped one of his note cards when he was in Russia.

If I were the Muslims though I wouldn’t be feeling too smug until they hear it from Putin himself.

No, Russia's over 23 million muslim citizens only make up about 15% of the Russian population (and rising.)

They make up the major group which is reproducing at a above replacement levels, something not happening to the Russians, Ukrainians or Byelorussians....

Russia needs their money, their ability to buy arms, and the assurance they will keep attacking US interests worldwide - other than that - Russia is a fool in believing that if Islam is successful in destroying the US that Russia’s fate will be any different...

Wrong. Vlad Putin put a jihadist muslim “ex-rebel” who supports sharia law in charge of Chechnya. He built the largest mosque in Europe in Chechnya.

The Russian dictator, whether the Tsar or the Communist leader, is a reflection of the Middle Eastern God--a capricious dictator of the spirit and flesh that demands complete submission to his rule without question. In this regard Islam and Russia have much in common.

The Madhi (sp?) and the Anti-Christ are one-and-the-same!

And Russia is prophesied to help him!

In Russia those ethic groups are named Turkish, not Muslim. Being Turkish does not obliges people to be religious fanatics and Jihadists. In any nation really religious are only several percents, majority are conformists and secular. Most people are too lazy, light-minded or hedonistic to be deeply religious.
BTW, when Putin was president, head of his administration was Vyatcheslaw Surkov, AKA Aslanbek Adanbeghovich, Chechen by nationality. In our regional Duma there were two deputies - Chechens.

Did he smile when he said it?
