I am happy that someone else caught the “I grew up in Hawaii” comment. Years ago, Freud had something to say about his “off prompter” comment.
I was born in one city (where there was the hospital) but grew up in a small town nearby. I tell people "I grew up in [town]" and think nothing of it. I don't feel compelled to add "but I was born in [city]." The city and town are only a few miles apart, within the same state and county. Here BO is talking about a whole STATE. It's not as if he was saying "I grew up in Honolulu" (which seems to be what a normal, natural-born person would say).
Moreover, why is he mentioning Hawai'i when the 2009 All-Star Game was held in St. Louis, MO? I'd think a normal person would mention to his hosts something he had experienced and liked about their city.
