Hemingway was mentally unbalanced and drank heavily. As another noted, he was likely attempting to self-medicate. Many of his adventures seem to combine a Walter Mitty imagination and an almost suicidal level of risk taking. Considering the manner of his death, I think he probably was attempting suicide with his fascination with war, bull fighting, safaris, etc.

I've known some guys like him; much of what they do with their lives is playing. He's playing war, playing bullfighter, and was playing spy. Guys like this can do real damage, but they're just playing.
