INDIANAPOLIS -- They supported him on his way to the Statehouse, now a group of Indiana Republicans are behind an effort aimed at taking Gov. Mitch Daniels to the White House.
An assembly of GOP insiders known as the Frugal Hoosiers has launched the Web site Americans For Mitch, extolling the current Indiana governor's qualities as a leader and a possible presidential candidate.
"I think Americans could benefit from his style of leadership and what he brings," said Mike O'Brien, a former Daniels staffer and chairman of the Hendricks County Republican Party.
The site has garnered media attention since its launch on Wednesday, including a mention in a blog from The Washington Post, and drew 1,200 hits in its first day, O'Brien told 6News' Sarah Cornell.
Americans For Mitch details the governor's political background, encourages visitors to become supporters and prominently highlights a quote from Forbes' Reihan Salam: "If Republicans are ever going to make a comeback, they need to make the case against never-ending bailouts of the rich and connected. The right man for the job is Mitch Daniels."
As for the governor's thoughts on the site, O'Brien said that Daniels didn't have any input on the page and may not even know it exists, a sentiment reiterated by Daniels' spokeswoman when asked for comment about the site on Friday.
But Indiana Democratic Party spokesman Thomas Cook said he doubts that.
"If the governor wanted to put the distractions to a stop, he could, more than easily, do that," he said. "But I think he's become excited about all the people who like to talk about him. He's content letting people continue to do that."

No thanks
(Actually, I don't know anything about Daniels, but I just wanted to be the first to get this in).
I think our instinct should be NO WAY!! until we know more about him.
1. Has he even thought about raising taxes
2. Private school/home school supporter?
3. Pro-Life
4. Anti-descrimination by govt?

LOL
I'm willing to take a look at Daniels.
He has his own RomneyCare and is just another government retread , working for Lugar and then the Bush adm.

next?
I see...
He won’t drain the swamp in D.C. , he’s made a career in D.C. before becoming Gov.
Where the hell do you get this stuff? He wants Lugar out of there and he did a great job when he worked for Bush, and so far Indiana is a heck of a lot better run since he got here.
Interesting. Of course some of us thought Mark Sanford should run.
I didn’t.
I like Mitch, I think he should definitely throw his hat in the ring.
Where the hell do you get your info. Here are the facts!
While in college he interned in the office of then-Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar. In 1971, Daniels joined Lugar’s re-election campaign, then joined the mayor’s staff and within three years became Lugar’s principal assistant. After Lugar was elected to the U.S. Senate, Daniels followed him to Washington, D.C., in 1977, as administrative assistant.[3]
Daniels served as Lugar’s chief of staff during his first term from 1977 to 1982. When Lugar was elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Daniels was appointed its executive director. He served in that position in 1983 and 1984, playing a major role in the successful effort to keep the GOP in control of the U.S. Senate. Daniels was also manager of three successful Senate campaigns for Lugar. Daniels was part of the Reagan Administration when he became chief political advisor and liaison to President Ronald Reagan in August 1985.[3]
Shucks. When I see the name draft Daniels, I’m thinking Charlie.

Yes , Daniels and Lugar - 2 peas in a pod.
Ohh .. if Daniels is so good how did he let Obama carry the state while he was at the top of the ticket running for reelection?
Where does he stand on guns?
I don’t know anything about Daniels. I looked him up on CATO; FWIW, here’s what they have to say:
Mitch Daniels, Republican
Legislature: Divided
Grade: B
Took Office: January 2005
Mitch Daniels served as President George W. Bush’s first budget director. Daniels was a fiscally conservative voice in the White House, and he has tried to restrain spending in Indiana’s budget. He has proposed, and the legislature has passed, general fund budgets with low growth rates. But Daniels has been less of a fiscal conservative on tax policy.
In his first year in office, he proposed a temporary increase in the top income tax rate. In his second year, he proposed a tax increase on cigarette smokers, which was enacted in 2007. More recently, Daniels supported a tax overhaul that swapped a one percentage point
increase in the state sales tax rate for local property tax relief. While the plan delivers an overall tax cut of about $700 million annually, it may lead to larger government in the long run by reducing tax competition between local jurisdictions.
