Bush Deserves More Credit on Iran
WSJournal ^ | July 11, 2009 | JOHN P. HANNAH

Defying their regime once more, Iranians have renewed their protests in the streets of Tehran. Last month, when the protests began, the New York Times ran a story hinting that Iran's demonstrators may have been inspired by an "Obama factor." The article suggested that President Barack Obama's diplomatic outreach, unlike his predecessor's approach, emboldened Iranians to rise up against their regime, demanding it repair relations with America and the world.

The Times reporter drew a stark contrast between the presidency of George W. Bush and that of Mr. Obama. According to the article, "Iran's regime was able to coalesce support by uniting the country against a common enemy: President Bush, who called Iran a pillar of the 'axis of evil.'" Alarmed by Mr. Bush's hostility, Iranians "swallowed their criticism of [their] hard-line regime and united against the common enemy."

Setting aside the article's claims about an "Obama effect," its characterization of the Bush years is unfair and misleading.

By destroying Saddam's regime, The US removed a strong support for the PA and Arafat - no more money to the parents of suicide bombers, etc.

The quasi-democracies and our fair-weather friends of the area, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, etc., were strengthened and became a part of the solution to one degree or another.

The revolutionary spirit in Iran and Syria became emboldened.

George Bush's legacy and fight endures in the Mid East, despite, and in spite of Obama, and THAT is Obama's real dilema in Iran and across the Mid East..

It was George Bush's policy of direct engagement and support of liberty that has led to the people of Iran seeing the measure of freedom now established on both sides of them in Iraq and Afghjanistan...and desiring it for themselves.

Obama cannot possibly go too far in recognizing that, or he absolutely repudiates himself and his entire foreign policy.

...but Obama doesn't want to "meddle".

The fight in Iran goes on.

Others were not.

Eyewitness Account to Slaughter in Iran 6/24/2009

While brave Iranians are slaughtered in the street by their own government as they seek liberty, Obama disinvited Iranian officials to American 4th of July celebration.

Meanwhile, they are axing students to death.

"There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.

"All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: The United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you.

"Democratic reformers facing repression, prison or exile can know: America sees you for who you are -- the future leaders of your free country.

"The rulers of outlaw regimes can know that we still believe as Abraham Lincoln did: "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves; and, under the rule of a just God, cannot long retain it."

Iran is all Bush's fault /s

Obama factor my @$$! The Iranians see the democracy that former Pres. Bush released in Iraq (purple fingers and all) and maybe they want some of it themselves.

He also deserves credit for doing more ($ wise) for Africa than the previous two Presidents. Right or wrong he helped them more.
