Russia's new nuclear sub completes first round of sea trials

MOSCOW, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's newest Borey class strategic nuclear submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, has completed the first round of sea trials and is returning to a shipyard in northern Russia, the Sevmash plant said on Friday.

Sea trials of the submarine, which is expected to be armed with new Bulava sea-based ballistic missiles, started on June 24 in the White Sea. "A team of workers and submariners has successfully completed the set tasks," Sevmash general director Nikolai Kalistratov said.

He added that the Yury Dolgoruky would still have to pass a number of sea trials later this year to test equipment and performance levels. The vessel is 170 meters (580 feet) long, has a hull diameter of 13 meters (42 feet), a crew of 107, including 55 officers, a maximum depth of 450 meters (about 1,500 feet) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles and torpedoes.

The construction cost of the submarine totaled 23 billion rubles (about $713 mln), including 9 billion rubles ($280 mln) for research and development. Two other Borey class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash plant and are expected to be completed in 2009 and 2011. Russia is planning to build eight of these submarines by 2015.

According to Navy officials, fourth-generation Borey class nuclear-powered submarines will form the core of Russia's fleet of modern strategic submarines, and will be deployed with Russia's Northern and Pacific fleets.

I heard some way on FOX this morning, "The leader of the free world was going to meet the Pope." Is that statement still accurate? Under this administration, all I see our Navy getting is a dinghy or two.

Gotta pass that "budget neutral" (ROTFL! Some lefty congresswoman on FOX.) freeloader healthcare bill don't ya know.

NOT TO WORRY. Barry is -- ahem -- taking steps to offset the Ruskies.

Armed with a single MA-2 .50 caliber Browning, this much feared naval vessel carries up to 30 rounds of armor piercing ammunition. It is the first in an entirely new naval architecture class -- technically, “clitoral” (not to be confused with “littoral”) -- being pushed on the Pentagon by the defense minded wussies in the Obama Administration as a cost-saving measure. If you look closely, you can see the heavy-duty seat restraint which prevents the pilot/gunner – Kamakazi Kowalski – from leaping from the vessel prior to engaging the enemy. The 12 V trolling motor – which lacks a reverse function -- propels this sophisticated craft forward at a top speed of 4 knots. Reverse travel – at approximately 35 knots -- is achieved by firing the Browning.

The no-bid contract to build 200 of these fearsome warships was recently awarded to Obama-Soros-Emanuel Shipbuilding and Stormdoor Manufacturing (formerly General Dynamics) and will be administered by trusted Obama associate and Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emanuel who commented that, at $12 million each, they are a bargain. They will be constructed exclusively at the company’s facility in Kenya with major subcomponent production (rivets and miscellaneous fasteners) at the company’s Harlem and Skokie plants. Delivery is expected to begin in 2024 (or as soon as the subcontractor's funds are safely in the contractor's Swiss account).

All brought to you by the high oil prices and western dollars flowing into Russia.

How are the Russians financing this new Borey?

By selling Kilo class subs to China.

If you have to ask where China is getting the money, log off and go back to your crayons.

713 mil sounds like a bargain for a ballistic missile sub.

Prop design is highly classified. The reason is that subs try to prevent “cavitation” as the prop spins. If the prop creates bubbles as it spins, the noise created makes the submarine much easier to detect. The Russians are covering their prop because they don’t want us to know who’s technology they stole.

Yes there was a stink a while back with the Japanese and the CNC Prop cutting technology getting out.

They bought the technology from...Toshiba during the Reagan admin.
Toshiba supplied the software and computers, a German Co. (IIRC)supplied the machining tools.

To this day I refuse to but a Toshiba product.

I remember it well.
Toshiba took out full page ads in selected newspapers across the Country apologizing for their action.

For the life of me I couldn’t understand why Pres. Reagan didn’t revoke their import license.

Russian subs went from easy sonar targets too tough ones.
