Ministry of Apology would cure all ills
Washington Times ^ | July 10, 2009 | Wesley Pruden

What the country needs now is a new bureaucracy to manage the growing appetite for apologies, amends and remedies for various other slights. The apology could be the lasting legacy of Barack Obama. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of oppressed people are no doubt eager to line up for their apology, waiting to be rewarded for slights real and imaginary, ranging from inability to find a parking space to ancient indignities suffered by long-forgotten ancestors...

...Congress is considering a resolution thanking the slaves, most of them dead and gone beyond the reach of Congress since late in the 19th century, for their work on building the Capitol. There will be a plaque...But a resolution apologizing for "the peculiar institution" is threatened by the Senate's insistence that an apology must exclude anything about reparations for descendants of slaves.

...Obama's major accomplishment so far is a speech apologizing to the Islamic world for nobody is quite sure what...Maybe it was an apology for saving Sunni Muslims in Bosnia, which offended Shi'ites. Or maybe it was for saving the Shi'ites, which irritated Sunnis. Maybe it was just for being an American...shame is the default position on the leftmost fringe of his party.

A federal Ministry of Apology, Amends and Reparations could send out Certificates of Apology by the millions, trimmed in imitation gold frill, suitable for framing. Reparations, on the other hand, would be difficult...Who would get what? How much? Would African-Americans with white ancestors, even including slave owners, be entitled to get as much as African-Americans with only slave ancestors? Only a Ministry of Apology, Amends and Reparations could decide...

The congressional apology for slavery is in jeopardy not only because the Senate resists the idea of reparations, but because the Congressional Black Caucus smells a rat, or at least a large mouse.

Just come up with some new lyrics for the old Connie Francis song: I'm Sorry, then play it on selected selected radio stations 24/7/365.

Lol, you're correct. Connie Francis sang: Who's Sorry Now, which would also be appropriate at times.

I think the folks who have had to call 911 because their fast food was not to order should be the first in a long line of victims at the Capitol. Barack, Michelle, & the kids should stand in a receiving line, along with ALL members of Congress, to shake the hand of these people, & express deep sorrow for their wrongs.

That ought to take 3+ years to do. Plenty of time for the country to recover on its own, & just in time to elect someone else.

I wonder who we could get for the “Apology Czar”?

Joe Biden already has a job somewhere in the administration doesn’t he?

Someone needs to put a video clip together with Obamalama speaking in foreign countries with I’m sorry playing in the background. It would be a hit for sure.

I agree. Maybe someone will. I just haven't gotten into that creative use of the net, so far.

...shame is the default position on the leftmost fringe of his party.

Fringe? On the contrary, it's the default position of the mainstream. The notion that prosperity is theft is so internalized by now that it dominates both foreign policy in the form of a Chomsky-like insistence that everything the country does is evil, to domestic policy, where it insists on an economic leveling that is little short of envy-based cannibalism. There are no mild forms of this ideology, only severe and less severe expressions.
